It is also smart. Vanek will get top line ice and PP in Detroit which will inflate his stats so the Wings can flip him at the trade deadline for assets toward their rebuild.

Me too Vanek is gonna be 35 and I see an aburpt decline for him/point totals when it happens. I think the Wings still miss the playoffs one more year.

A lot of twitter-commentary out there that Vanek will be dealt again at the trade deadline in 2019. His new deal w/@DetroitRedWings contains a full NTC as protection, so that won't be happening unless Van chooses to waive.
