Melnyk considering options to sell the Senators
https://www.thefourthperiod.com/pagn...-for-franchise
Quote:
Speaking on the basis on anonymity, a well-placed source with direct knowledge of the situation has confirmed to TFP that Senators owner Eugene Melnyk has engaged in negotiations to sell the franchise.
According to the league-source, Melnyk has received one offer for the organization and that “offer had been considered.”
During last week’s Board of Governors meeting in Las Vegas, while not officially on the agenda, league owners discussed the $135 million refinancing loan the Senators announced they finalized on Wednesday and also discussed the offer pitched for the club.
The offer is believed to have been rejected, but word is negotiations are ongoing and Melynk is exploring options.

The offer to buy the team has apparently come from Cirque du Soleil founder, billionaire, and Québec City native, Guy Laliberté. With Laliberté's name attached, you have to wonder if the team is sold, will he be looking to move them to the nice new arena in his hometown?

Daly confirmed to Garrioch that there is an offer to buy the Senators but Melnyk isn't interested in selling.

Daly confirmed in an email to this newspaper Thursday morning that an offer to purchase the team had been made, but he didn’t say where it came from and noted the franchise isn’t up for sale.
“Eugene has no interest in selling the Senators,” Daly said an in email. “Offers are made for NHL teams all the time. Doesn’t really mean anything.”

I would rather have Ottawa Senators move into Ottawa and one of the faltering american teams move to Quebec city.

It would probably be better for Ottawa if the Sens were bought/moved to QC and then eventually the Canes were moved to a new rink in Ottawa.

The plan is to build a new arena in the LeBreton Flats area in downtown Ottawa and construction is slated to begin sometime in 2019.
Construction could begin as soon as 2019 on a massive downtown development centred on a new NHL arena for the Ottawa Senators, after the hockey club and its partners reached an agreement in principle with the federal government.
Thursday's announcement by the National Capital Commission, which manages federal lands and events in the Ottawa-Gatineau region, was the result of nearly two years of behind-the-scenes negotiations that appeared to be unravelling as recently as a few weeks ago.
The plan involves a 21-hectare site in downtown Ottawa called LeBreton Flats that has sat mostly vacant for decades. The area, about two kilometres west of Parliament Hill, has been an empty field since the 1960s, when the federal government expropriated an entire neighbourhood of industrial properties and row houses.

More recently, there was talk that the negotiations on the LeBreton Flats development have stalled and Melnyk was suggesting that he might pull out if things don't pick up soon. That was likely just an empty threat, but if he starts getting serious about selling the team to Laliberté, the threat to move would have to be taken more seriously.
Laliberté owns a massive house outside of Montreal, so he might prefer to keep the team in Ottawa anyway.

Sens fans definitely needed some good news. If this is paired with a new owner that wants to see this team back in Ottawa I'll be really happy for them.
It's funny that Ottawa is basically everything the Flames fans are asking the team to work on, but much worse.
Our arena isn't to the fans liking: they don't even like the city their arena is in
Concerns with some players on the roster: their whole roster is in shambles
Tired boring jersey: tie goes to the worse logo
We're not fans of the owner: ...hold my beer.

No. The League is not approving a team-relocation into their existing $0.5 B expansion market.

Yes?
I mean, the Canes will be a better roster than the Sens will be once they lose Karlsson and probably end up moving Stone for donuts.

I can't remember who said it in a recent thread about Bryan Murray being the glue that held the Sens together, but he/she was spot on. That said, Melnyk is not a good owner and I hope he does end up selling the team at some point in the not too distant future.
