Default Best Lumber Dealer

Looking to build a new fence in the next week or so and would appreciate any insight on the best places in town to purchase lumber (best price / quality bang for the buck). Undecided at this point whether we will go cedar or PT.

Related question - neighboring fences in the area are cedar that has been stained to a standard color that was used throughout the community (newer development). If we go with PT for budget purposes, can it be stained to match the adjacent cedar or will there be a mismatch in appearance?

Thanks!

Appreciate the shout out Madman (and Locke!), we can definitely help you out screedle. Also note that the pressure treated we carry is the Micropro Sienna, which is brown in colour so it will look much closer to existing cedar fences in your neighbourhood.

It's been a crazy season for lumber prices, but we are right there with Home Depot and can even get you in a little better with the CP discount.

I was going to recommend going to Timbertown too, and I didn't even know that it was Bigtime's shop. It's a great store with a very rare thing - staff who know what they're talking about.

I live in Walden and the developer (GenStar) provided fences for all the corner lots but not ours because our place doesn't have the same visibility from the main through-ways. Nice for privacy / low traffic but the trade off is we have to do our own fence.

I feel like CP should have a living Spreadsheet where everyone puts in their username and 'area of expertise'. Basically like a Yellow Pages for CP.

Dont be wuss! Get an axe and head out to the woods and make your own lumber!

Do you have any idea of the overall ecological impact of having trees chopped down, shipped, processed into lumber, treated, shipped again just for your convenience?

Your privilege is showing and it is ugly. I sentence you to three 'Hail Trudeaus' and a complete re-reading of the Leap manifesto.

I am also able to help as one of our resident Avgeeks, Skyscraper nerd, and as of last night Junior Goat Herder (anyone that follows me on twitter will know what that is all about).

The weed control goats showed up at McHugh Bluff last night (they are camped out on the green space just west of Centre street at Memorial drive). We went over with the kids yesterday evening and the lady running the show asked if we wanted to help. So we set up netting further west and then helped herd the goats when she let them out to start grazing. It was actually a lot of fun, she had another person on a horse to help herd and her border collie kept them in check too. They will be working the McHugh bluff space until about August 15th if you want to check it out.

Bigtime, what is your opinion on how the new Sienna PT boards hold up over time? Are they more prone to warping or are they in reality 'just as good' (or better) than the old PT?

This is year two for us carrying the Sienna PT and I'd say the quality is much better this year than last. No difference we've heard of for warping and such (although a 20' board twists the minute you look at it once the bands are off the lift).

It's definitely where the industry is going, Home Depot was still green last year and they went all in this year on the Sienna too. So I think we'll all be rolling "brown" treated until the next colour change (grey/silver is actually out there a little right now too).

semi-related question. Just extended my deck using brown PT lumber, and the existing deck is grey/green PT wood I think. The plan was to stain the whole thing to a consistent color.

What's the best waiting period for the new brown PT before I stain? Would the staining look different because of the two "vintages" of deck boards?

Thanks!

Does Bigtime also deal with composite decking? I need to do the front steps over and was thinking composite would be the way to go there.
