Default Oilers’ McLellan, Flames’ Gulutzan deliver gifts to injured Broncos

Quote:
The two bench bosses arrived in Saskatoon on Sunday morning to deliver presents to the surviving members of the SJHL’s Humboldt Broncos who are recovering in hospital after Friday’s horrific bus crash. The Oilers’ and Flames’ seasons ended on Saturday night.

Nice to see this. Both coaches are originally from Sask as well. There’s a video embedded in the link

I saw this while reading the front page and I thought they were fired.

Nice gesture by both guys.

It's going to be tough to see GG fired if it happens. He seems like a good man.

great gesture by GG and McLellan... puts things into perspective...

tough season for both, but there are things more important than winning and losing hockey games

Not that I don't think their herts are in the right place, but I never understood the need people have of giving gifts and money to people after a tragedy. Personally, the last thing I'd want is any kind of gift after such a horrible life changing event, something that would act as nothing more than a constant reminder of that event. The idea that 15 of my team mates are dead and I'm here alive and now receiving gifts... Go, speak to them, listen to them, let them know they're not alone, sure, but gifts?

Just accept that different people will react differently. Also, consider that you may not actually know how you'd feel in that situation.

The survivors are junior hockey players or in the hockey community. I bet presents like signed stuff from NHlers goes over well.

Generally they (the gifts) are things that are meant to provide a nice distraction, or signify that someone else is thinking about them.

Money is often to relieve stress so they don’t have to worry about bills or costs of certain things, and can just focus on healing (mentally or physically).

I understand both gestures, and I think both are remarkably kind. Good on these coaches.

True, I'm just trying to put myself in their position. 15 of my team mates and friends are dead, I'd likely have some survivors remorse as is typical in these instances. I would feel even more guilty receiving gifts or even expressing any kind of joy immediatly after such a event.
I don't fault their intentions, I know it coming from a selfless, caring place. I just don't know if it's the right time for gifts.

They were in Saskatchewan before most of us were out of bed.

Wonderful thing to do.

Gulutzan won't be fired because he is a nice guy. He will be fired because he is a lousy head coach.

There's a period of time where you're just going to be with family. Then theres the funeral costs which folks may not be able to afford. Then there's the time off work. Mental Health costs. There's a whole lot of things that the 3+ million is going to do for those families than just random folks tossing a few bucks and saying thoughts and prayers. It's going to help the grieving significantly. Gifts for kids and siblings will definitely help as they will no doubt be having a hard time processing things.

Our Airdrie kid! There's a separate GoFundMe that's been started for Ryan and his family by Airdrie citizens. I think they were aiming for $10K - not sure how its doing. ETA: just over $4300 and found the link

Classy response by both men.

Regardless of what you think of him as a coach, Gully was pretty choked up when he was interviewed - I guess he's from nearby?

And they had to leave pretty early, surely with other things on their minds. Good on 'em.

Great of them to do that. And cool that they did it together - a real statement of solidarity.

If I was making 40k a year and my child became a quadriplegic in a bus accident, seeing a $4m GoFundMe might give me a little hope.
