Flames not sending any scouts to the world U18s due to environmental concerns
per McKenzie on TSN, Flames are one of 5 NHL teams not sending scouts to the IIHF u18s due to radiation spikes detected near the host site.

Norm!
Shouldn't we be sending our players there so hopefully they can get some freaky mutant powers that will help the teams winning record.

Or the real reason is because we don't have draft picks

Well there are still kids there that are eligible for 2019 draft and could be had in the later rounds of 2018 going as well.

Sucks not to have scouts there but priorities. Sucks for the players and scouts of the other teams that have to go.

That, and you never know if the Flames will trade up or acquire a high pick in this draft at some point.

Because the IIHF is being stubborn.

Previous uptick in radiation doesn't necessarily speak to the current state, especially several months ago. Ignore the hockey prospects- there are thousands of local kids there, and not just for a week. They would be the ones at risk during fluctuations.

Is the radiation dosage even significant compared to what they would get on the flight?

Given several teams aren't sending scouts, at least one federation wants it moved and there were special meetings held regarding the issue, I would say the answer is pretty obviously yes.

Yes to volume, intensity, and length of exposure

Then why does any team actually send scouts anywhere? There is video for almost every game for practically everything.
Scouts go to see what the camera doesn't show - what they do away from the puck, how they support the play, how good their IQ is, etc. You can't pick it all out from video. So yes, the Flames will therefore have a bit less information than other scouts on teams that will end up going. I agree with the decision, but it isn't as if they can simply review the tapes and be caught up.

Can we use, " Not attending due to environmental concerns" for the Hlinka as well? At least for all games north of Red Deer.

Honestly one tournament isn't a deal breaker. They probably have more than enough viewings on players that a few extra games won't drastically change their opinion.

I don’t know, breakout performances at the U-18’s is where you find hidden gems like Mason Macdonald hiding in the early second round.
