Scary to think that a weak dollar could have cost us a talent like that!

Thanks for sharing. One of my favorite articles about Gaudreau was written by Scott Cruickshank back in 2014 about how the Flames went about drafting Gaudreau: http://www.calgaryherald.com/sports/...624/story.html
Turns out the Flames had their eye on a Russian prospect in 2011 who turned out to be pretty good as well -- Nikita Kucherov.

Looking at the article, the Flames could have got Kucherov, but they chose everybody's favorite whipping boy Wotherspoon instead...

Wonder what they saw in Markus Granlund instead? Similar sized players with great shots. Except, Kucherov is just so much better in every single other way. Gaudreau to Kucherov could've been a hall of fame duo right there. Like Kariya and Selanne. Too bad.

Russians are a huge gamble though. Can see why they may have taken a pass.

It appears like veiled nepotism to me.

They are, but I'm a fan of drafting the best player no matter what. The risk is worth the reward if you ask me.

Not nepotism unless the kid is related to an ex-player in the organization that gets him (cough Brett Sutter). More like checking bloodlines (worked with Tkachuk - ). Or perhaps they want to see if there is some relative they didn't know about with bad blood with the organization. Like if the Flames drafted Kessel but had dealt badly with David Moss in the past (cousins).

I'm a bit surprised that the exchange rate would potentially keep the team from hiring a US scout. I know the budget was much tighter then, but would it really be worth not properly scouting a very good hockey country over a few 10s of thousands of dollars?

Wouldn't surprise me is a single scout has a closer to 200k when you factor salary, travel, hotel, and other expenses.

I was more thinking the difference between a Canadian scout vs a US scout. Any way you look at it, it makes sense to me to spend on trying to improve drafting if you're a small market team.

The whole pre salary cap era and weak dollar era was awful. So glad it is over for the most part
