Default Missed Shots

Just looking at the numbers for missed shots in the league this year.

Ranked:

1. Calgary 938
2. Carolina 892
3. Toronto 854
4. San Jose 854
5. Tampa 852

Calgary pretty much on their own at 15 times per game.

I pulled Pittsburgh to see the culprits for both teams.

Players that have missed the net 70+ times this season between the Penguins and the Flames

Calgary (6)
Hamilton 76
Gaudreau 73
Monahan 76
Giordano 77
Tkachuk 77
Ferland 70

Pittsburgh (1)
Crosby 75

On a percentage basis when you take missed shots / (missed shots + shots + blocked shots) ... Players that miss the net 1/5 of the time (20%) or worse out of each team's top ten most frequent shooters

Calgary (8)
Gaudreau 22%
Monahan 25%
Giordano 20%
Tkachuk 27%
Backlund 23%
Frolik 23%
Ferland 31%
Bennett 31%

Only players under ... Hamilton at 18% with the most shot attempts on the team, and TJ Brodie with the least of the top ten.

Pittsburgh has only 5

Totals for the top ten shooters on each team.

Calgary
Attempts 2930
Shots 1521
Blocked 742
Missed 667 23%

Pittsburgh
Attempts 2640
Shots 1535
Blocked 596
Missed 509 19%

Take Aways:
  1. The Flames miss the net a lot.
  2. Many of their top players are doing it.
  3. Is part of the problem shooting too much?
  4. Is it trying to avoid blocked shots and missing everything?
  5. Better rebounds off a block than a shot wide?

Ugh thank you!

This by far has been one of the more frustrating parts of the flames struggles this year.

Glad to see the stats correlate.... Not sure how it gets rectified. I suppose it falls back to the intangible of confidence

Are those all clean misses or do they include blocks or deflections?

Of all those players I mind Monahan's the least, even though he's one of the higher percentages. I know he's trying to pick corners, and he does it successfully often enough to make me happy.

A lot of Johnny's misses are from his bad angle shot, which has now been pretty well scouted.

Cross bars
Wide

IMO It's a style-of-play problem. The Flames don't play "fast", which means they are always shooting through layers of set defenders in traffic. They don't pass fast, don't forecheck fast, and don't really defend fast either as we rarely clog up the neutral zone. Our power play, even when it's clicked, doesn't emphasize getting one-timers, instead guys collect pucks, think for a long time and then throw a prayer in the general direction of the net.

I’m glad this is backed with stats because it just confirms what most of us have been seeing all year. The team can generate shots but holy hell do they need one to two more finishers on these lines. Even with Tkachuk and Ferland both getting 20+ goals this team is still having issues with filling the net

Monahan is a "finisher" and so is Tkachuk lately. But they still have high miss percentages.

Not surprised to see Bennett leading the way. Muffin shot that never hits the net. He really needs to improve his shot.

I'm surprised at Chucky's because his good chances are always from two feet away.

It was Kulak.

I had run the number at the start of the season and Kulak was only getting like 40% of his shots through the blocks, it was unreal, bottom-of-the-league kind of stuff.

It's gotten much better lately to the point where I don't think he's any worse than the other D, if at all.

I don't know who's the worst now though.

Do his tips that go wide count? He tips a lot of shots.

For context, 20.7% of all shots miss the net league-wide. So I wouldn't worry too much about guys missing a low-20s percentage of their shots.

That said, Ferland, Bennett, and Tkachuk are somewhat high. I've got a hunch that the data I want isn't available, but I'd be curious to see a breakdown by shot type and shot distance for those players in particular. Could be Simpson's paradox or something equally benign. Those 3 spend a fair amount of time in the create - maybe deflections and rebounds miss the net more often than other shots?

Gross. Kinda knew the numbers would be high.....so we know the analytics of this but do the flames ?

I mean seriously .....I've watched guys look like they were deliberate in shooting into shin pads , shooting at bad times , just not being patient enough to wait to get shots thru .

If it isn't missing shots, blocked shots it's letting the goalie see the shot every friggin time.

I miss the old days when Big Al or Suter was firing shots from the points....no one wanted to block those.

Maybe they need a swear jar/ missed shot jar.....$100 bucks per missed shot and the jar when full gets donated to _______??

Start hitting the net fellas.

Hey bingo, does this info have a breakdown of powerplay vs es shots/shot block attempts or is it total?

I feel like an inordinate amount of blocks come from the powerplay from most of the season where their puck movement basically forced the opponents to clog the box and then they tried to shoot through 8 guys

I had a feeling that we were a team that was in the upper echelon of missed shots. These guys need to just stop trying to find the perfect shot upstairs. Instead, they need to focus more on trying to hit the net for rebounds or shooting at different holes. Not sure there’s a more frustrating play in hockey then missing the net on a Grade A scoring chance.
