Gaudreau named NHL's 2nd star of the week
https://www.nhl.com/news/claude-giro...0?sf84369345=1
Quote:
NEW YORK (Feb. 12, 2018) – Philadelphia Flyers center Claude Giroux, Calgary Flames left wing Johnny Gaudreau and Minnesota Wild goaltender Devan Dubnyk have been named the NHL’s “Three Stars” for the week ending Feb. 11.
FIRST STAR – CLAUDE GIROUX, C, PHILADELPHIA FLYERS
Giroux registered 3-3—6 in four games to propel the Flyers (28-19-9, 65 points) to a perfect week and third place in the Metropolitan Division standings. After being held off the scoresheet in a 2-1 overtime victory against the Carolina Hurricanes Feb. 6, Giroux rebounded with 1-2—3 – his sixth three-point performance of the season – in a 5‑3 triumph over the Montreal Canadiens Feb. 8. He then scored one goal in a 4-3 shootout win against the Arizona Coyotes Feb. 10 and closed the week with 1-1—2 in a 4-1 victory over the Vegas Golden Knights Feb. 11. The 30-year-old Hearst, Ont., native ranks sixth in the NHL with 18-46—64 in 56 outings this season, already more than his 82-game point total from 2016-17 (14-44—58).
SECOND STAR – JOHNNY GAUDREAU, LW, CALGARY FLAMES
Gaudreau placed second in the NHL with 2-5—7 in four contests to guide the Flames (29-19-8, 66 points) to a 3-1-0 week and into third place in the Pacific Division. He recorded 1-2—3, his sixth three-point effort of the season, in a 3-2 triumph over the Chicago Blackhawks Feb. 6. Gaudreau then posted 1-1—2 in a 3-2 victory against the New Jersey Devils Feb. 8. He closed the week with one assist in each of his next two games, a 4-3 loss to the New York Rangers Feb. 9 and a 3-2 win over the New York Islanders Feb. 11. The 24-year-old Salem, N.J., native and reigning Lady Byng Memorial Trophy winner sits second in the League with 48 assists and 66 points through 56 outings this season.
THIRD STAR – DEVAN DUBNYK, G, MINNESOTA WILD
Dubnyk went 2-0-1 with a 1.96 goals-against average, .950 save percentage and one shutout to backstop the Wild (30-19-6, 66 points) to five out of a possible six standings points. He made 35 saves in a 6-2 victory against the St. Louis Blues Feb. 6. Dubnyk then turned aside 36 shots in a 4-3 overtime loss to the Arizona Coyotes Feb. 8. He capped the week with 44 saves, the second-most ever by a Wild goaltender in a shutout, in a 3-0 triumph over the Chicago Blackhawks Feb. 10. The 31-year-old Regina, Sask., native owns a 22-10-4 record with a 2.60 goals-against average, .919 save percentage and four shutouts in 38 appearances this season.

He's having a fantastic year as compared to last year. So glad he's a Flame and staying that way!

He’s my vote as the team’s MVP this season and a dark horse for the Hart. He’s figuring in on well over 40% of the team’s goals which is the very definition of the Most Valuable Player to his team.

I like Gaudreau a lot better when opponents aren't chopping his hands off.

I’ve actually read and heard people mention we should trade Gaudreau on overtime and etc. I question the sanity of those people as he may very well become the most valuable assett in the league if he continues this type of production at his current contract/term.

That contract looks almost criminal at this point.

I can't believe they didn't go with McDavid because of his four goal game. Prepare for outrage...

It's a shame Johnny has to play in the shadow of McDavid and Matthews in Canada. If Matthews was 2nd overall in soring it would be all over TSN.

I already got an outrage text from an Oiler fan about it. Told him he should be pissed we are getting the same production for half price.

Not to get ahead of myself here, but has there ever a player to win an art ross, lady byng and hart all in the same year?
Was thinking Gretzky era he had as shot but I think his lady byng, and art ross’s were different years?

From Wikipedia:

Five players have won both the Lady Byng Trophy and the Hart Memorial Trophy as league MVP in the same season: Buddy O'Connor (1947–48), Bobby Hull (1964–65), Stan Mikita (1966–67 and 1967–68), Wayne Gretzky (1979–80) and Joe Sakic (2000–01). Mikita is also the only player to win the Hart, Art Ross, and Lady Byng trophies in the same season, doing so consecutively in the 1966–67 and 1967–68 seasons. Gretzky, Bobby Hull, and Martin St. Louis also won these three awards, but not in the same season. Bobby and Brett Hull are the only father-son combination to win the Hart and Lady Byng trophies.

At around the 7:00min mark of the second period last game, the Flames were on a PP but the Islanders turned the puck over and raced for what looked like an oddman rush against.
Gaudreau skated hard on the backcheck and battled Cizikas down the middle and took away a 2-1 chance. Not only that he eventually got control of the puck and started back on the attack.
I recall Blashill talking about how he skates so hard on the backcheck and how well coached he's been. That play was another example of Blashill's praise.
Gaudreau is playing unbelievably hard this year - so impressive

I remembered way back when Iginla was in his prime, 25 or 26? People called into overtime and said we should trade him for some up and comer and some draft picks. Crazy people are crazy.
