Scoring Winger
|
Goaltending is so good it's killing us...
This is probably one of the most ridiculous and stupid statements. But if you just think about it, looking at the past 15-20 games... We usually got the lead coming into the 3rd period, while our goaltender allowed 0 or 1 goal maximum. And it's not because we are playing so good defense, it's because goalie didn't let in any soft goals, on the contrary has stopped a lot of chances. So the coaching staff and the team probably think it's ok to play "kill the time" style, low scoring game. But I think this team has a lot of scoring talent, if it's utilized the right way. This shows up when we allow a goal and the team is trailing. The urgency is there, all of a sudden. But why it's not there when we are playing with the lead, or when the other team ties it late, that's beyond me. Back then we had unreliable goaltending, we were pulling of comebacks and overcoming deficits with ease. Now we score 1 or 2 goal and play like Smith (or Rittich) can take care of everything else on it's own, if we park a bus on the blue line. Giving our goalies a comfort of scoring some more is out of question for some reason. I know, we have some badluck with converting chances, but the way we approach tight games is so repetitive it can't be all blamed on puck luck.
I am thinking, without the goaltending we have right now, how would those games look like? If our goalies were letting in goals and we would HAVE to play more offense? Maybe we would be winnig 5-4 instead of 1-2 OTL. Blame Smith!

Why are we complaining about objective non-problems? This is puzzling stuff.

While I have thought the same thing at times, I haven't dared post it here. Kudos I guess. I think this all comes back to coaching still, and could have simply been a comment in that thread.
If good goaltending is losing you games it's time to fire the coach.

Scoring Winger

Don't take me too seriously please, it is supposed to be on a lighter note. It's just a thought: our goaltending is giving us a luxury of possible low scoring wins. Of course Smith is our undisputed MVP. MAybe you missed the 1st sentence: "ridiculous and stupid statement". I said it myself.
So this translates into "it's the system's fault". Rely on perfect goalteding way to much while intentionally hold back the offesive potential.
Still, being able to play for 1-0 or 2-1 night in and night out is something new for this franchise and I thought it was interesting to point out.
