Interesting to see the contrast in leagues between the Finnish and Swiss teams-- mainly KHL for the Finns, but no one from the KHL for the Swiss. Is it an issue where the Swiss players don't want to play there or lack the talent? I don't follow the euro leagues much but thought the contrast was intriguing.

The Swiss league is a place where you can earn six figures and live in one of the best countries on earth for quality of life. It’s a reason why only relatively few NHL prospects make it to the NHL despite hockey being quite popular there.

How does the talent level compare to the KHL?

Seeing how many ex-Flames are in these non-NHL Olympics rosters make you think that how much we sucked in drafting/developing/signing players in years past...

Thus far I think I've made two complete 5 man units and two goalies out of ex-Flames.

Kazakhstan didn't qualify, IIRC, so too bad for Nigel Dawes and (I think) Dustin Boyd.

I actually think having so many ex-Flames on these rosters are a feather on the cap of our drafting/scouting guys. There are thousands of players who are drafted/signed and a few years later are forced to get ordinary jobs and abandon their hockey careers altogether.

The fact that many of our ex-players have had extended careers in professional leagues show that our scouts can identify good talent, even though not all of them work out in the NHL.

Gaetan Haas is an offensive center, who plays a reliable and smart two-way game. An excellent skater, who reaches very good top-speed and can make end-to-end rushes. Has soft hands and strong puck-skills. Haas sees the ice well and can play the point on the Power Play, distributing the puck using his excellent vision. He leads by example by competing hard for the puck, doing solid backchecking and not being afraid blocking shots, rounding out his solid defensive game. Haas can lead a team’s shutdown line.
