Default Alcatraz three might have survived

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/alcatra...tter-suggests/

John and Clarence Anglin and Frank Morris who became legends and myths for possibly escaping from Alcatraz were thought to have died drowning in their attempt to get away.

But a recent letter was received by a person claiming to be John Anglin contained a deal that he would turn himself in for treatment for cancer.

Quote:
"My name is John Anglin. I escape from Alcatraz in June 1962 with my brother Clarence and Frank Morris. I'm 83 years old and in bad shape. I have cancer. Yes we all made it that night but barely!"

"If you announce on TV that I will be promised to first go to jail for no more than a year and get medical attention, I will write back to let you know exactly where I am. This is no joke…"

that story seemed to indicate that the fbi might re-look at the case, while another department was seemingly not interested in do anything.

will be interesting to see if anything comes of this. as the one agent noted, there are some people somewhere that know about these guys.

I watched a show sometime back that investigated all this and some of the brothers relatives pretty much admitted they knew they were alive and living in South America.

The FBI reopened the case when the police department received the letter. In 2013.

I think thats a hilarious indictment of the American penal and health systems.

"Take me back to jail because I'm sick and cant afford health care, so if I'm jail the Government has to take care of me."

Yeah...

"Crime doesnt pay kids! Unless you're sick or dying, then give 'er a whirl! What have you got to lose?"

I'm pretty sure for this to remain true you had to stay within the walls....

Things aren't that different here. I've definitely had clients commit crimes for the purpose of getting shelter, food, and/or proper treatment for drug addictions.

But I agree about the privatized medical industry in the USA.

I have a friend that swam daily in SF Bay. A little cold but doable.

I'd like a reality TV show agree to provide this guy healthcare and legal defense in exchange for his story. Worth it to find out the truth behind the "myth".

(Mythbusters proved you could do it IIRC).

Every 2nd episodes contains obligatory Knights Templar theories. Yay.

I do wonder if its him, would his sentence be commuted at all, I suspect that given the prison was something of a hell-hole I would hope they'd just say "time served" and be done with it. I guess that would defeat the purpose of coming forward though.

I don't recall a single Knights Templar theory in all the years I watched Mythbusters. I f-ing loved that show.

You thinking of Oak Island? Or maybe you were just speaking as regards reality TV generally and I misread.

I'll defend Mythbusters to the hilt man!

Yeah, I'm no conspiracy theorist AT ALL, but after watching a documentary on it years ago, I had to kinda roll my eyes at the very stubborn, gruff old policemen working the shift that night that were interviewed for the doc, who very confidently claimed that there's no way they survived. Of course you don't want to admit people escaped and survived under your watch, especially after seeing your stubborn, alpha personality in the doc. Doesn't mean it didn't happen.

I have no doubt they survived that night.

Has anyone ever done the tour of the rock?

I went way back in the 80's, so i dont know if they still allow it, but during that tour if you wanted they would put you in the "hole" and close the door for about 30 seconds. It was unbelievable. It was so dark in there that you literally could not see your hand 2 inches in front of your face. There was a hole in the floor for a toilet, a blanket and a pillow...that was it.

According to the guide at the time, guys were thrown in there for a max of 19 days before being allowed out. Of course they were fed 3 times a day but the door would only be open for about 20 seconds each time. Pure physical and mental torture really. Once your 19 days were up and the warden wanted you to serve more time in it, they would open the door, let the inmate walk across to the outer wall and them march them back in. Completely inhumane stuff.

Just an amazing structure though, and getting out of it would never have been the biggest problem, but getting to the mainland? Yeah all kinds of hurdles that could cost you your life.

Yes, I was just mocking reality TV series in general, specifically how Knights Templar are played up a lot when it comes to unsolved mysteries. It's like reality TV filler material.

Yeah I did it back in 02, sadly the outer area was off limits so I couldn't reenact any The Rock chase scenes.. We didn't do a guided tour (something I now regret, as when you don't specifically know what you're looking at, after a while everything starts just looking like "yet another cell" and it gets a little boring, even to a history nerd), so I didn't get to experience the lights off thing in the hole. But even with lights on it looked dank and scary. Wonder if that green stuff all over the walls was like that back when it was still open, it looked straight up subterranean.

Yeah the guide was really cool actually. I think my favorite part was the actual cell where one of them had dug out a space in the wall to get into the pipe system, was still there and in tact.

Hard to fathom how long it took to make that hole and not get caught and then through the hole in the dead of night and following it outside only to face the swim of your life in bone numbing temps.

I did a tour a few years back and was surprised at how small it was.

I watched a program on this escape and was left with the impression it was likely they made it out alive. At least one body would have been recovered given the search.
