New years eve? Weird day to get this done, no?
In any case, good news for the kid. Especially after being cut from the wjc team recently.

Good for Phillips.
Will be interesting to watch him develop, especially as another high scoring 6th rounder debuts tonight.
Hopefully posters can leave their shake up stuff to other threads.

So, that's 48 contracts now?
They were going to sign him anyways, may as well be today.

I don't think it counts until he plays professional

Wouldn’t his contract slide since he is in junior and not count toward the 50 limit?

Are the Flames allowed to sign Adam Fox while he is still in college?

Well, he'd have to leave college.

They can sign him at any time, but the second they do he is no longer eligible to play NCAA hockey.

Yes! Happy they finally signed him. Was a bit worried they wouldn’t.

I think it may have something to do with the date of the signing and the amount of years it can slide as an ELC.
It sounds as if the Flames want to pack as much development time as possible in with Phillips.

Worth remembering we chose Phillips with the 6th round pick we got back for pending UFA David Jones, who promptly played 22 games for Minnesota and retired. We also got Nicklas Backstrom, remember him?

By signing him today, it counts as an 19 year-old signing and can slide one year (this year). If they signed him tomorrow, it would be a 20 year-old signing and wouldn't have any slide years attached (which also means they wouldn't sign him tomorrow and would have likely waited until closer to the June 1 deadline).
It's not quite the same as when they signed Poirier on New Year's Eve a few years back because that did get them an additional slide year, but it helps get the paperwork done early.

Does this affect his 2020 waiver status at any point VS June? Poirier/Shink had to clear waivers this year while Klimchuk didn't, so I was curious.
