Default Brake Replacement Cost

Anyone get their brakes replaced recently? Just want to know what a reasonable replacement cost is.

The car is a 2009 Mitsubishi Lancer if that matters.

Rotors only? Pads and rotors? Need caliper work? Premium parts line or jobber brand?

Brakes are one of the easier things to do on your car (need probably 7 tools max), and can usually save over 50% doing it yourself with better parts.

Pads and rotors. Do rotors need to be machined?

Not always, no. But never a bad idea when getting new brakes.

Do you need to do both front & back? Your front brakes wear faster than the back ones. You'll do your fronts twice to three times before needing to do the rear brakes.

Approx $400/axle for pads and rotors. Add $100 for a brake system flush. You can expect around $1,000 for complete pads/rotors front and rear and a flush.

Front and back, pads and rotors (replaced not turned) maybe you are looking at ~$800 bucks assuming no need to replace or repair calipers.

Bit of a guess as I don't know what parts run specifically for that vehicle but if you wanted an exact quote you would ask a mechanic.

Yeah we had our back brakes down within a year or so and I think it was around $500 if I remember correctly.

Our MDX had the rear ones worn first, interestingly. It cost less than $100 with pads only (rotors were within spec and didn't have to turn), caliper tools, grease, etc. when I changed them last year. Youtube has many DIY videos to watch if you want to see how it's done. If you can change oil, then you can change brakes and rotors, IMO. I did the front ones this year and was just as easy. Recommended brake fluid interval is supposedly every 3 years, but when I checked the water content in the brake fluid, it was under 2% which was normal, according to the tester. So I didn't change the brake fluid this time around.
