Icon48 CBC/Rogers extends HNIC partnership for 7 years

http://www.cbc.ca/sports/hockey/nhl/...gers-1.4455962

Quote:
CBC has extended its partnership with Rogers Media to keep broadcasting Hockey Night in Canada and the Stanley Cup playoffs until 2026 as part of a new sub-licensing agreement.

The new English-language broadcast deal will begin in the 2019-2020 NHL season, at the conclusion of CBC's previous four-year deal and one-year extension. Rogers is currently four years into its 12-year, $5.2-billion deal with the NHL that runs through 2025-26.

...

Sportsnet will continue to produce the games, retain all editorial control and manage advertising, according to a joint statement from Rogers and CBC. Games will continue to be produced out of Sportsnet's Hockey Central Studio at the CBC building in Toronto.

"Hockey Night in Canada is the most celebrated hockey brand in the country and is steeped in tradition," Rogers Media president Rick Brace said in a statement. "CBC has been an excellent partner over the years and we are excited to extend our relationship."

CBC will continue to broadcast nationally televised regular-season games on Saturday night, plus all four rounds of the Stanley Cup playoffs as part of the new deal. Hockey Night in Canada games are also available on the CBC Sports app, the CBC TV app and at cbcsports.ca, in addition to the multimedia platforms offered by Rogers.

It's kind of gross that taxpayer money is going to Rogers to help subsidize that ridiculous NHL broadcasting deal.

Wait, aren't you one of the biggest proponents of taxpayer money going to subsidize another private venture?

I'd rather it go to Hockey than Emily of new moon new edition or something silly like that.

If you can't see the difference between a local tax money going into arena that we can all use for sports and events and federal taxpayer money going into a company like Rogers that screwed themselves for paying high for the NHL rights and does nothing for us other than overcharge us for communications and force us to settle for their monopolized, shoddy hockey broadcasting then I don't know what else I can say to you.

I just find it funny that it's ok to publicly subsidize certain bad hockey-related business decisions, but not others.

I think it's funny when people stretch goal posts miles to suit their side of an argument.

People who cherry pick services they don't like their tax dollars going to because they don't like/use them personally are the worst.

Also CBC was airing the games at no cost to them, I believe Rogers was getting to sell the commercial time as consideration in return. But let's not let that get in the way of some good anti CBC ranting.

Assuming it's the same as the original deal, CBC doesn't pay anything. Rogers pays all the costs and gets all the revenue. In return CBC got to keep a flagship program on their network and was allowed some ad space to promote their own content.

What do you mean? I watch HNIC and I'm using that but I am allowed to say I don't like my tax money going into it. For the record I don't use libraries but you will never see me post that I believe taxpayer money should not be used on building new libraries. Your rant is slightly misguided.
