On this day in hockey

1909 - The National Hockey Association was formed in Montreal. The NHA was the forerunner of the National Hockey League. Charter members included the Montreal Wanderers, Renfrew Creamery Kings, and the Montreal Canadiens.

1925 - New York Americans played their first NHL game, a 2-1 OT win over the Pirates, in Pittsburgh. Billy Burch scored the first goal in team history, and Charlie Langlois scored the winner at 3:10 of overtime.

1949 - Hockey Hall of Fame inducted it's newest members: Dan Bain and Art Ross.

1969 - NHL Board of Governors announced in New York that expansion franchises had been awarded to Buffalo and Vancouver. The two new teams would begin play in 1970-71.

1977 - Detroit Red Wings obtained veteran Dennis Hull from Chicago in exchange for a future draft choice in the 1980 draft. The Black Hawks later used the pick to select Carey Wilson.

Battered Flames forward Bennett begins recovery process
Kristen Odland

At first, Sam Bennett saw black.
And then he saw red.

Both were not good signs for the Calgary Flames forward who was hit in the face (!) with a puck on Tuesday, a clearing attempt by Toronto Maple Leafs netminder Frederik Andersen which struck him directly above his right eyebrow, underneath his visor.
Bleeding (a lot), Bennett rushed to the bench and was ushered down the tunnel with a towel pressed to his face.
But for the onlookers in the Scotiabank Saddledome, at home watching the game in the Calgary area, and especially those in the Bennett household in Ontario, the seriousness of the injury was not known.

Game Day: Flames vs. Oilers

1. MOST COMPLETE EFFORT?
Calgary Flames head coach Glen Gulutzan thought that Thursday’s 3-0 win over the visiting Arizona Coyotes was exactly that — their most complete effort in 2017-18. Other games may come to mind (Calgary’s 2-0 win at Anaheim on Oct. 9, a 2-1 OT victory over Pittsburgh on Nov. 2, a 6-3 win over Detroit on Nov. 9) but the Flames certainly improved from Tuesday’s 4-1 stinker against Toronto. “I maybe had some disagreements with Connie (Craig Conroy),” Gulutzan said. “But it’s something we’re going to build off of.”

5 NHL Players Who Need to be Traded

Brett Slawson

As the fourth overall selection in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft, Sam Bennett was expected to become a consistent and powerful scoring threat for the Calgary Flames. However, with Bennett now in his third campaign with the Flames, such has simply yet to transpire.

Brad McLeod

The Rockets are led by a number of high-profile NHL prospects including Dillon Dube (2016 second round draft pick, Calgary Flames), Kole Lind (2017 second round, Vancouver Canucks), Carsen Twarynski (2016 third round, Philadelphia Flyers) and defenceman Cal Foote (2017 first round, Tampa Bay Lightning).
Dube and Lind are tied for the team lead in points with 32 each, and the bench is also very deep behind them.

Good lord. Bennett has to be traded? What an idiot for a writer.

Yo, Brett Slawson, it’s time for a change of profession and scenery for you buds.
What a terribly written article. The attempt to be clever with his structure and hockey quips, the ongoing rambling pre-amble and then the meat of the article reading like a riddle...
what a brutal article.

In my entire life the Jets 1.0 or 2.0 have never been tied for 1st in the league, so pardon if I take a moment and enjoy it, even if lasts just this one morning

Their 16-6-4 record through 26 games has them tied with the Tampa Bay Lightning at 36 points at the top of the league, though Tampa has one game in hand.

Never one to get ahead of himself, head coach Paul Maurice cautioned the rest of Hockey Twitter to do the same.

Gotta hand it to the Jets so far.

Staying the course with Chevy and Maurice looks like it might pay off.

That's a pretty damn deep team, and the age of most of their key guys means its likely sustainable.
