Default Anyone have experience dealing with UPS? UPDATE: Computer found

Hey CP

Just wondering if anyone has any advice dealing with UPS
I shipped my computer to Toronto from Edmonton using UPS. I shipped it in 2 boxes, the monitor and the tower. The monitor made it okay, but the Tower has been "Out for delivery" for since Friday. I called UPS about it, and they sent it to their investigations unit. However it may take up to 8 days for them to get back to me. In the meantime, I'm just suppose to keep tracking it and waiting for any updates
I definitely insured it and filled in the box on the shipping manifest on the estimated value

Last fall I shipped a giant crate from Calgary to New York via UPS Cargo. It sat in their warehouse for a week or two in New York for no reason - all they had to do was drop it off at the customer's location a few miles away. They gave me a full refund which was pretty cool as that wasn't a cheap bill lol.

Make sure you get a refund.

We use UPS where I work for no other reason than they are crazy cheaper than Purolator. We used to use them and had no problems, things arrived before 10 but they were more money.

You get what you pay for with UPS, I would never personally ship anything with them. I trust Canada Post more than i trust them.

As others have said, make sure they give you a refund.

I've had stuff vanish and languish in various UPS warehouses. They usually do track stuff down in the end. Just wait the 8 days, I suspect it'll pop out sooner or later.

Curious I've always had better experiences with UPS than with CP.

I ship a lot of stuff to the US and Overseas using a variety of carriers. UPS is by far the worst in my experience. The only reason I use them is some clients prefer using them. I would never willingly use them unless they were the only option.

FedEx is much, much better. Generally always on time for pickups and deliveries. Very helpful customer service.

FedEx did lose a package I sent to Baghdad, but they called me right away and said that they would refund the amount, something that is generally a hassle with UPS.

UPS = Use Purolator Stupid

Also, with Canada Post, I once shipped something to Iceland...It took 4 months to get there. They put it on a Ship in Halifax, which i've never heard of. Usually you can't ship ground with UPS/FedEx to overseas. You can only ship air unless you use UPS or Fedex Freight. So I just assumed Canada Post would air it to Iceland. Not so. Why it took 4 months, I have no idea. Sailing from Halifax to Iceland is only a week or two. So it must have got lost somewhere.

Purolator = Canada Post

The solution to this problem is to pee on something you're not supposed to.

I purchased a new computer online and they shipped it UPS. One part said it had been delivered to a woman on their tracking system while I was at work. I'm single, none of my neighbors had it so I was worried. 2 days later everything showed up along with my apparently already delivered item.

The driver also decided that he would leave $2500 worth of computer components on the front step in November instead of ringing the door bell (I was home at the time). Luckily I heard the truck door close and drive away and went to look right away. Needless to say they are idiots and I phoned and chewed them a new one.

I agree with Purolator being the best.

I had a computer shipped by UPS once before - it was a major headache. I ended up running all over town trying to get it as it got moved from one depot to another after their first delivery attempt failed (I had the delivery address changed by the shipper after it was shipped late, and UPS refused to deliver to the new address regardless of what I or the shipper said), with them not knowing where it was half the time. I eventually did get my computer though. I've also had stuff shipped from the US to here by UPS, and been dinged with border-crossing service charges (not stated up front) that exceeded the value of the shipment by a considerable margin. Needless to say I avoid UPS whenever possible now, since I've never had problems with other courier companies.

Losing your stuff? Thats pretty much the experience I've had with them too.

UPS = Oops.

UPS ground also charges ridiculus brokerage fees when getting things from the US. UPS air waves the brokerage fees.

UPS is also terrible if you aren't home to pick up the package. Instead of going to the local UPS store to pick up the package like fed ex or purolator you have to go to the Warehouse in the NE with terrible hours and hope they can find your package.

This is correct. A lot of the time, if you have to ship UPS, it may be cheaper to ship it air than it is to ship it ground because of the brokerage charge.

I had a UPS driver tell me once to always ship UPS air, because it is almost always cheaper, importing from the US that is.

I'll never get anything shipped from the US via UPS - ground or air. Bunch of crooks.

Fedex ground is the same way. I live in the deep southwest and their pick up facility is by the airport. I phoned them and they said it was open till 8. I got there at 7:15 and it was closed (actual hours were till 7). Phoned and complained, they said they would deliver it to my office, they didn't, it sat there for 3 or 4 days before I went to pick it up. They did sent me some chocolates as an apology though.

Just from sending things overseas, I see this misconception all the time. You are assuming that once the package reaches the ship they start the engines and get underway.

In reality they wait until they have a shipload before setting sail. So that might be waiting until a shipping container is full to take that container to the dock; and waiting until the ship is full of containers before heading out. Or they could be taking the ship elsewhere to load or unload cargo. It is quite possible that ship went to the UK or even mainland Europe before heading north to Iceland.

I will agree that 4 months is way too long; but 1 week is also way to short of a time frame to expect something to arrive by ship.
