Icon46 Derek Dorsett will not return to active roster due to health reasons and risks

The Vancouver Canucks have announced Derek Dorsett will not return to the active roster due to health reasons and risks associated with playing.

Quote:
“What I can say for certain right now is that I left it all out on the ice. I gave my heart and soul to the teams I played for and never backed down from a challenge, including this one." - Dorsett
Quote:
Dorsett's care, led by Canucks Head Team Physician Dr. Bill Regan and Director Rehabilitation, Dr. Rick Celebrini, began with a treatment and rehabilitation regimen to address an ongoing condition. In December of 2016 the decision to perform cervical disc herniation surgery was made and performed by Dr. Robert Watkins.

Following surgery Dorsett progressed through successful treatment and rehabilitation, consistent with expectations, and was cleared to play at the start of the 2017.18 season. Recently, symptoms of neck and back stiffness presented.

Tough to see someones career end like that.

Much as it sucks, just shut it down. Long life ahead, no reason to make things worse.

That's a real shame considering how well he was playing this season. Right call though.

Want to make a joke about part of one's anatomy taking over. However in good taste I will avoid it.

This sounds terrible and I feel for the guy having to hang them up so abruptly. Pretty sure that this leaves a big hole for the canucks as he was a big contributer even on the score sheet this year.

Never like to see a forced retirement for health issues, hope he didn't do any extra damage coming back and going forward the can live a pain free life

He was playing great this year, was always willing to stand up for his teammates too. Canucks had an intermission segment a few weeks ago too about who the guys sit with on the plane and you could tell Dorsett was really well liked by the team

Everything you hear about him says he was great in the room too, he's credited with a lot of Horvats development in his first year on how to make the jump to the NHL

Best of luck to him going forward

Man that sucks. Guy was killing it this year.

Heart and soul player, nucks got a lot of flack for extending him but he's been decent.

Tough break as dorsett was having a season for the ages.

Sounds like the same issue that eventually sidelined Smid.

As horrible as this is, and he was one of the few Canucks I spoke highly of, I hope this means the Vancouver can finally settle in near the bottom of the division where they belong.

Thank you CP for staying classy. Always sad when a dream must end as it surely is for Dorsett. Best of luck in futures.

I don't think Nucks were ever too much threat for our Flames this season, but a faltering Vancouver might improve Edmonton's hopes. They are still pretty hopeless though.

I have never met Derek Dorsett, but I do know Derek's brother, Chad, who lives and works in Calgary. Chad told me a lot about Derek's passion for the game and how much hope he had for this season. As with almost all other NHL agitators, the real guy is very different from the on-ice persona, who must play a role assigned to him by the coach. It is very sad to see someone's dreams crushed.

That's really too bad to see a career end this way. Like others said he was having a hell of a season, must be tough to make that call, but it seems like the right one.

I don't really see it that way, and I hope he doesn't either.

He got to live the dream for a decade and over 500 NHL games. I'm sure he has experiences and friends that will last a lifetime.

Of course it's sad, but I don't think it's "dreams crushed" sad.
