So the entire Biological Sciences building was locked down, armed and somewhat aggressive police telling students to stay away, fire trucks, hazardous clean up truck, mobile biological hazard centre...
What was going on? I overheard some professors talking about exposure and symptoms.

Here's an email I received:
At 11:30 a.m. today the Bio Sciences building was evacuated as a precaution
due to a concern involving an envelope sent to an office in that building.
Since that time another envelope has been discovered in the same office
and we are now in the process of investigating whether or not these packages
pose any harm.
Please be on alert that if you receive an envelope or package with no return
address or a return address of anyone you do not recognize or in particular
has a return address of North York, Ontario DO NOT OPEN the envelope. Call
Campus Security immediately at 220-5333, identify yourself, your building
and room number. All occupants should leave the room, shut the door and
wait in the immediate area for Security to arrive.
More details will be provided later today when they are available. Any
concerns should be forwarded to 220-5847.

Yea, I parked in lot 32 and on my way out you could not turn right.......they were directing everything, including buses, to take crowchild.
Don't know what happend, but I'm sure we will find out in a few hours.
The e-mail sent out suggests there was just a SCARE about some packages.....didn't think it was anything too too harsh. But seems alot worse then what I first thought.

Wasn't there some chemical leak yesterday at the health sciences building (beside foothills hospital) that resulted in an evacuation as well?

The Calgary Fire Department was called out this morning along
with CPS and EMS at 1124 hours for a haz mat call at the UofC
Bio Sciences Building. Initial reports from a male occupant
inside the office was that there was an unknown substance in
an envelop that he opened and he was experiencing nausea and
was lightheaded. Due to the health concern, a full haz mat
call was initiated and the office of concern was cordoned
off. There was 11 people in the immediate vicinity of the
office who were all decontaminated as a precautionary measure
and assessed. The male who opened the envelop and a female in
close proximity were treated and transported by EMS.

Didn't hear anything about people actually getting sick. That's scary stuff. Hope they're ok. When I first got there I thought it was some sort of drill, like last year when they had a car flipped over infront of Mac hall.

Update:
The Calgary Fire Department has given the University the "all-clear" to re-open
the Biological Sciences building and regular activities can resume immediately.
The rooms in the building have been locked. If you left personal possessions
in the Biological Sciences building, please contact Campus Security at 220-5333.
They will require a description of your possessions prior to allowing you
into that area. Please note that there may be delays in response time due
to the number of requests.
Thank you.
