Holiday Decorations
When should they go up, turn on or come down?
What are the societal rules of the road here.

Anytime after Remembrance Day seems fair game to me.
While we usually wait until December, we might put them up early for our kids; they really love the decorations.

Lights stay up on the upper roof year round because I’m lazy. Icicle lights will go up this week when it’s warm, nothing get turned on until Dec 1.
I don’t get a tree or do any inside decorations since Christmas Day is spent at the parents house. We do presents, dinner and stockings there

I reserve the right to complain about any decorations that are put up before December 1st. However I recognize that for most businesses Oct 31 is the new Xmas decorating date.
For residential, I'd say it depends. Lights, go nuts pretty much whenever. If it is a big inflatable santa complete with dancing reindeer and some elaborate display, you should probably wait until late November/early December. No one wants to see that #### for 2 full months.

I'm going to celebrate Christmas this year by building a Christmas tree out of empty Jack Daniels bottles held together with bitter tears.

We put the lights up in the afternoon on November 11th, turned them on the next day. Simple white icicle lights.
Inside Christmas decoration stuff will probably be a week or so into December.

depends if you have kids.
either way, any time after Nov 11 is fine. (I would prefer to wait until December, but my wife won't let me)
I traditionally take everything down after Ukrainian Christmas.

Lights go up this weekend (since hopefully, it will be warm) they are turned on from Dec 1st through the 26th. They go down on the first Chinook of the new year.

Mine were up and on the Monday after Remembrance Day, along with a handful of other people on my street. I absolutely love this time of year. I leave them up & on until after New Years Day.

I watched my neighbour put his up on Sunday in that cold wind. I remained inside, warm and toasty, watching football and looking at the weather forecast for the week coming up.
Tonight is probably the night I go out and loosen a few of his bulbs so none of his strings of lights work. I love this time of year.

have a couple nice homemade ones that went up on the weekend.. haven't turned on yet.. need to put up some strings to complete it...
was cooking breakfast sunday morning and some neighbourhood boys were in the middle of trying to steal some bulbs.. a good tap on the window and a stern point had them running..

Outside lights are up and on in the evenings. Tree is up and lighted nightly.
My wife loves Christmas decorations, I see no reason to ruin her fun with rules.

I'm now pining for those child-free days when I could not put up decorations without judgement.

I put my tree up on Saturday, because I was bored and the weather was crap. It's the earliest I have ever done it though. My normal is last week of November, first week of December. I sometimes leave my tree up until 12th night. That was the tradition in my house growing up. My Dad always hosted a 12th night party for the officers in his regiment.

when do you take them down?
I guess you could just leave the tree up year round and redecorate it for whatever holiday is happening.
then you'd get a valentines tree, st patricks tree, easter tree, etc.
