Assuming they knew roughly where they lost it, they might try Costco. Do they have a lost and found?

Someone got dumped in the Costco parking lot.
Usually these things happen at IKEA.

my wife and I were joking about that. probable came off when they took gloves off though. Who knows how long it was there and where the person lives. people drive for miles to go to Costco.
I'll exhaust every available avenue because I know how much it would suck if my wife lost hers.
I've contacted the company that's stamped on the inside as well in case it was a custom ring.

It could be and older woman who doesn't use social media. Perhaps put a notice in the Herald.

I dunno, a paper ad is going to get all sorts of false claimants.
I'd probably turn it over to the store manager and let them deal with it. If someone lost it, that's probably the 1st place they call.

Why would the cops destroy it after a year? From my experience with a similarish case in the UK it's a case of finders keepers after a period of time. The cops give you a receipt when you hand the object in and after a period of time another one stating that no one has claimed it and you are now the owner of said object.

that's what i was told as well but not what the police said at the station. They said I had a better chance of finding the owner through social media

Keep it for now. Document your conversation with police and let Costco know. If Costco doesn't have anyone ask in the next couple weeks then you have a choice to make...send it to the cops or keep it.

Some diamonds have micro sized serial numbers and can be traced.

Yes. And an autopsy was performed. Although the body was not DNA verified.

Presumably the ring has a diamond (or diamonds) in a style typically worn by women as engagement rings? Otherwise why would you even assume it’s an engagement ring, rather than just any old ring/band for any finger. Also the size might make it fairly obvious it’s not a mans. The ring my husband wears on his pinky fits on my thumb.
Anyways, good for you trying so hard to find the owner, OP. Whoever lost it is probably pretty upset. The age/style of the ring might give some clues as to whether the owner is likely to be searching social media vs. an ad in the classifieds.
