Icon47 Alex Ovechkin gives homeless man his coat and hat

https://www.usatoday.com/story/sport...ton/810077001/

The title of the article says he bought him the clothes but the coffee shop in Edmonton says he took off his own coat and hat and gave them to the man because he was cold. Classy!

Man, what a renaissance year for Ovechkin, and this is great too. Gotta hope his play continues too (not on Sunday though), it's always a treat watching him at his best.

Wow, neat! So nice to hear something positive for a change. And the fact that talking about it made him uncomfortable makes me like him even more. I didn't really know he was this kind of person, thank you for sharing

This is the kind of thing that has always sort of made me like Ovechkin over Crosby. With crosby the stories are a kind of mixed bag, but OV actually seems to be a really stand up guy.

I like them both for the most part, generally I have to understand that I'm normally not going to be able to really like Crosby all the time because the spotlight is so squarely in his face constantly that it seems impossible for him to be genuine.

Crosby could be giving piggy-back rides to disabled orphans from war-torn countries and the reaction would be "of course he did."

AO doesnt have that so he has more leeway to just really be himself which makes stories like this nice to hear.

Plus hes Russian and every Russian lands somewhere on the spectrum of 'a little insane.' Theres something in the Vodka.

This is completely asinine.

Not many people would be willing to do something selfless like that for another person they don't even know. Respect.

Good to see OV being helping out an Oiler fan like that.

It gets cold when the last shirt you had was an Oiler jersey you had to throw in the ice after another Oilers loss.

The fact that this was never self-promoted it my favourite part of this story. It's almost like he got 'caught' doing it.

We see good deeds all the time, but when the guy tweets about what he did it is more marketing to me. A good use of your marketing, as someone in need is benefiting -- but less of a display of generosity when your best interest was the catalyst.

Makes you wonder what else Ovi has done without getting 'caught'.

A pretty significant chunk of the Russian women's tennis program, I'd wager.

Could you expand on this "mixed bag" that we get from Crosby?

I won't. I meant that Ovechkin is more authentic. Didn't mean to rustle any jimmies. Is that still a saying?

Not sure it makes me like on over the other but i know what you mean. Crosby seems so calculated but that's the consequence of being labelled gretzky 2.0 from time you were 12. He's had media training his whole life.

Crosby does plenty of stuff that goes under the radar. Hockey news is always full of events that he partakes in.

Luckily, both are incredible ambassadors for hockey.

I don’t really see partaking in events that will obviously get media attention as doing good “under the radar.”

I think what people are saying is while they’re both good people and do good things, Ovechkin seems like the kind of guy that really would just give the coat off his back. No event, no media availability, just passing by.

Kudos to OV for sure but if I made as much money as these players, I'd be much more charitable. The average person can't afford to just give up a coat to a random person. Shouldn't be a big deal for millionaires though, goods for OV.

Seriously? Don't you think saying that's a bit self righteous? You know, the exact opposite of what most people that do kind things for no reason are.

"Ya good for him, I mean I would do it far better but good for him"...

He can say the same thing about someone who makes $50M+ a year.

There's always someone making more than you. Focus on what you're doing instead of putting expectations on others.
