Sorry for not searching the topic but we changed our travel plans last minute because of the Hurricane and are now going to the San Diego area for the weekend. We are primarily visiting Legoland down there but I'm wondering what the good beaches and parks are down there?
Also I need some recommendations for great Mexican food preferably on the cheap.
Air craft carrier is cool,
Zoo is worth it but pricy
Children's pool in La Jolla is a neat beach with Sea Lions
If it isn't windy I though silverline or silver point beach was pretty neat. It is a thin strip of land running through the bay just to the south of Sandiego. Basically road and beach with water on both sides.
Are you staying up by LegoLand?
The San Diego Zoo and San Diego Zoo Safari Park are ~30 minutes South and East, respectively.
A really great family beach is La Jolla Shores. The waves are calm and it is fairly shallow. There is also a lot of room on the beach but it will start filling up in the afternoon. If you are lucky you might even get to see Leopard Sharks swimming up near the shoreline. They are completely harmless.
Balboa park is right next to the Zoo. It has many museums but is also a great place to walk around. On Saturday (Aug 26th) from noon-4 pm at the Balboa International Cottages, the House of Mexico will be having a lawn program including traditional Mexican food. At 2 pm the Tijuana Youth Symphony will be performing.

Enjoy the best city in the US. Wish I could move there.

How's the beach water this time of year? Most of the posts I've read say the waters quite cool. Have to get a wet suit apparently. Bit of a bummer if true. Is 20 degree water that bad?

The temperature around La Jolla cove now is low 70-73 F (20-22 C).
Once your in the water and have adjusted that is a perfect temperature.

Thanks. The Legoland hotel was sold out this weekend. We are staying just down the road. We stayed at the hotel in Florida and it was pretty cool.

we went to SD a few years ago in early august, and I have to admit, I was a little surprised at how cool the ocean was at coronado. as usual, you would walk in slowly - then just submerge yourself and it was ok. I would think the water temp is similar to some of the lakes around here.
as an aside, when we were frolicking in the ocean, a jet fighter flew parallel to the shore line at a low alttitude (maybe 1000 feet) and it was very cool to see. surprisingly it was hard to hear the jet until it got fairly close to being overhead.

Pacific Beach is the proper beach to be at. I've stayed on that beach twice in the last year. Great times. Also, check out a Padres game. The team sucks, but the stadium is awesome and it's a really fun experience. Craft brewery tours there are awesome as well. They have SO MANY CRAFT BREWERIES you'd think residents would be drunk there 24/7.
If you've got kids, and you've got a free day, you should definitely check out the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. It's about an hour NE of the city, but lots of fun. You can feed the giraffes and rhinos!
SD is a city that I'm hoping to move to one day, or at least buy some type of leisure property. My favourite place in California.
