Default Kickball or is it Soccerball?

Quote:
¨Alarming news from the north.
Canadian data blog The 10 and 3 has released a series of dialect maps based on a survey of 9,500 Canadians on the terms and pronunciations they use for 35 different terms, broken down by province and territory. It’s an engrossing post, and you should look at all the maps—it will reinforce the notion that much of Canada is deeply strange.
But nothing is so upsetting as the above map, which indicates that a large part of the country calls kickball “soccer baseball.” That doesn’t even make sense! Soccer is an entirely different sport altogether! This is baseball, but with kicking. “Kick baseball” would be logical. Shortening that to “kickball” is even more logical, and is indeed correct.
Even more upsetting, it’s Western Canada—the weird part of Canada—that gets it right, while normally normal Eastern Canada is being bizarre. (I’m ignoring the Maritimes in this stereotyping, because they’re basically Mars. Honestly, I would have expected them to call kickball something like “having a right foot-jigger.”)
Go look at the rest of the maps. I’m distressed.
I've grown up calling it Kickball and still to this day it's still "Kickball" to me. Never even heard of Soccer baseball until now, on another note what do the people down east call Handball than if they call Kickball "Soccer baseball"?

I have never not heard it called kickball, including in US movies and what not.

Here's the original post before deadspin apparently just took it. Although deadspin link doesn't go to this, so maybe a paste error?

The bigger problem here is chesterfield

We always called it kickball. But it was a game we grew out of. I don't remember playing it at all after junior high.

Do kids still play kickball today?

What the hell, rest of Canada? What the hell?

I wasn't previously in favour of Western separation, but I am now.

This is like when someone in Mexico told me Canadian's bought their milk in a bag.

Nope. Never not once.

It was like this until we smartend up in the late 80s/early 90s. Was just in Ontario and the place we rented had a milk bag pitcher like a heathen.

Interesting.

WTF, Vancouver and Victoria, are you trying to get kicked out of the country?

Looking through all of those, I'm definitely a born and raised Albertan. Some of them, like chesterfield and calling lunch "dinner" are things I'm familiar with more because of my parents. I feel the younger generations are becoming more homogenized, and Americanized. Speaking of homogenized, apparently, "Homo" milk is a uniquely Canadian thing too.

I feel like this needs an asterisk over Edmonton, where they just call them "NHL Defencemen".

I've got a split on a lot of those. I was born in Ontario but lived almost all my life here and Camp to me is normal. So is bristol board and I definitely don't say the last T in Toronto.

We called it California Kickball in elementary school for some reason, but it was Surrey after all...

Kickball.

But the real fun was playing belly baseball with the big crash mats. Having fifteen kids score from third when the last "batter" went to kick just doesn't happen in any other sport...

That's not the original post, that's just someone on Reddit stealing all the images are not giving proper credit.

This is the original post:

http://www.the10and3.com/this-is-how-canada-talks/

And by far the most disturbing out of all of these is the fact that people from Cape Breton Island call cottages/cabins bungalows.

I've always called it mac and cheese. Never Kraft Dinner.

I use Mac and cheese and Kraft dinner interchangeably.

Deadspin doesn't link to the Reddit thread because they linked to the actual source - The 10 and 3.

However, t0rrent98 should have linked to Deadspin, given he lifted their entire post, verbatim.

You could get milk in bags in Calgary up until the mid-80s. Milk trucks would even deliver the bags in those little shuttered milk chutes you can still see in old houses.

I don't know if kids play much it but it's an adult thing. I play in a league in Texas (mainly corporate teams). There are several leagues here each with a dozen or so teams. Mainly for fun but there are some very serious teams/leagues too. The amount of rules is staggering.
