Blue Jackets buyout Scott Hartnell
Link Here
He had two years left on his contract at 4.75M.
Buyout cap-hit is 1.25M for the next 4 years.

13 goals and 27 assists last year in 78 games on really good team. Not sure if I want.

Always been a fan - buyout is a bit surprising to me though.
He still put up 37 points last year, and that doesn't scream immediate buyout to me.
Really wish we didn't have Brouwer on the roster right now - would have no issue with Hartnell or Doan on short contracts if we didn't already have Brouwer.
Makes even less sense that they didn't do this before the expansion draft, could have saved them a draft pick potentially.

Could this have been the UFA Treliving was talking about?

He will probably sign a bargain bin reclamation contract with Nashville and put up 20+ goals essentially replacing Neal for a fraction of the cost.
Thats how Poile rolls.

Some team will pick him up at half price and he'd be OK at that salary.

...he wasn't a UFA earlier this week, unless you subscribe to the idea of time not being linear, in which case...cool.

He could have been informed days ago of the buyout.

Begs the question, why didn't they buy him out before the expansion draft? Then they would have had an extra expansion slot and not had to provide 'protection' assets to Vegas?
Something I am missing here??

I'm torn, he has a nasty streak and can put up points. Age aside I don't know what to think, should be cheap after being bought out. I'd rather have him than Doan that's for sure.

Hartnell is exactly what the Flames need. His work ethic, physical play and skill set is what the team needs to get over the hump against teams like Anaheim. Would take him on a one year deal for sure.

I have a hard time believing a player that just got bought out because he wasn't deemed good enough to keep around is a player any team needs. He's a complementary player like Versteeg that you bring in on a year to year basis where if he helps your team great, if not move on.

So like he said, sign him for 1 year and see what happens. He would add physicality and is not afraid to go into the corners.

I've always liked Scott Hartnell but I think its clear that hes well past his 'Best-Before' date.

I agree with the one year part but this team does not need Scott Hartnell. In regards to giving him a contract I suppose that depends on if the team wants Versteeg back. There's only so many roster spots to go around and I would hope prospects like Jankoswki are going to get every opportunity to make the team.
