Shooting at Bobahan pool
Don't know where to start. Did anyone hear about the shooting at Bobahan pool in forest lawn. My kids do swimming lessons there. The basketball court beside is always full of shady kids. Apparently 3 people were shot today at the court. Not sure how to embed the article.
Does anyone else that take their kids there?

Three people are in hospital after a Saturday evening shooting in the city’s southeast.
A little before 9 p.m., shots rang out at a basketball court outside the Ernie Starr arena on 14 Ave. S.E. in the neighbourhood of Forest Lawn.
“It was like four to five shots, all in a row,” one homeowner said, declining to give her name. “At first I thought it was firecrackers.”

As someone who grew up in Penbrooke and did all his swimming lessons at that pool, I very much appreciate your calling it Bobahan.

I'll bet that right now one of those kids that was playing ball is off to move in with a rich uncle and his family in another city

I don't think I've ever read a shooting story without the exact same witness quote of At first I thought it was firecrackers or some other loud noise. Not a single witness account in a shooting story has ever not had this quote, I'm sure of it.

I think what he's getting at is that if his experience is similar to mine it's always African-Canadian kids playing there. That's my observation of the 20+ visits I've made there playing soccer at the fields there anyway. There's always kids hanging out playing ball and lots of times I've seen arguments and a couple of times some fist fights break out which is normal for most kids I'd say - too bad it's escalated to shootings.

So always shady kids playing there + always African-Canadian kids + shootings at said courts = Black people are trouble.

Calgarians have always struggled a little to not sound that way. We've become a lot more progressive as a city over the years, but I notice our white citizens as a whole are still pretty open and quick to point to races in the city as problems at the drop of a Stetson. Almost eager to in a lot of cases.

That's a pretty big brush to paint a whole city with;
I guess we can all just put on big smiles, cover our ears and shout lalalala as loud as we can. If we just don't say that most shootings/gang activity or crime in general are committed by certain races then it won't be true, Is that right?
It's become such a faux pas to even mention someones race that it's detrimental to solving complex problems. Instead of looking at why it is happening and how we can fix it, the 'progressive' way is to ignore it and assume there is no connection or it could have been anyone.

Ignorance is bliss I suppose. Carry on showing everyone how progressive you are with your head in the sand.

I don't think that's the case at all based on my experiences. In fact, I'd venture to say that Calgarians are far better than their peers across Canada when it comes to prejudicial attitudes towards visible minorities. This is a function of Calgarians having relatively high levels of educational attainment and also population demographics that skew younger (older folks tend to hold onto their racist and bigoted beliefs and are less open to change).
When I think of the lowlifes that frequent my neighbourhood, it's a united nations of losers. There's no one particular race that stands out in terms of the criminal element.

I was speaking to public sentiment not action towards issues. I can assure you that you have me wrong if you believe I can't speak openly about race issues in Calgary, and don't understand them.
"Statistics show that African immigrants struggle to fit into Canadian culture are ripe for being taken in by bad groups in the area, to which local leaders and groups try their best to dissuade from happening with some support from Calgary police".
vs
"Oh, what a surprise, black people, you just knew it when you saw the area".
Calgary is full of the latter, which is counterproductive to the issues at hand. Sorry if my comment made it sound like I was trying to suggest we should ignore the issues or that I don't know anything about race issues. I'm fully involved and informed on these matters in this city.
