Default No NHL at the Olympics / Toronto VS Washington - Stadium Series

If anyone still had a glimmer of hope of the NHL participating in the Olympics next season its been snuffed out.

Quote:
Tampa to host 2018 all-star showcase

In stamping home that point, Bettman confirmed Tampa as the site of the 2018 all-star game and said a schedule for the 2017-18 season would be announced in late June.

IIHF president Rene Fasel said last month that there was "still some space" to convince Bettman. Fasel believed the NHL needed to be in Pyeongchang, South Korea, to grow their brand internationally.

Bettman repeated familiar arguments against the NHL attending, however, including the season disruption required of the Games.

"We're not anti-Olympics, we're anti-disruption to the season," Bettman said.
Quote:
Bettman confirmed an earlier report of an outdoor game between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Washington Capitals next March and thought Penguins general manager Jim Rutherford was engaging in gamesmanship when he complained about the treatment of captain Sidney Crosby.

"Maybe he's trying to tweak the officials a little bit," Bettman said.

Bettman and deputy commissioner Bill Daly hinted at the salary cap likely remaining flat at US$73 million (or slightly up) next season.

Two years ago, the NHL wanted to move to 3 on 3 for the All-Star Game. The union said "what's in it for us?" and the league gave something back - the five day bye week for each team.

The NHLPA wanted to go to the Olympics. The league said "what's in it for us?", and the players threw a temper tantrum.

It sucks for us as fans, but I have no sympathy whatsoever for the players. They had every right to reject the league's offer of a CBA extension for Olympic participation, but at some point, they really needed to figure out that stomping their feet was not going to achieve a deal.

I undersatand why the league doesn't want to go. I still don't get why players want to go. Seems strange to me that it's even a negotiating ploy. Especially with a World Cup now.

Soccer, Football, Baseball, Rugby, Cricket players don't go to the Olympics and they're fine.

We are Gaudreau fans and invested in him as a Flame. The Flames have invested 40 million in him. He can play for the US every 4 years in the World Cup and periodically at the IIHFs. That's enough.

Players are dumb if they don't want to extend the CBA anyway...I always find it odd they want to destroy the industry that makes them millions of dollars for playing a kids game

What interests, me is will the US and Canada send a team. Other countries will. We could send a team of AHL players that I think could do well.

They don't want to destroy the industry. It's more of the typical Union "us against them" mentality where they feel they are always being screwed by the owners and deserve more. Conversely owners try their best to keep as much money in their pockets as possible.

A pipe dream would be cancelling the WJHC and have them at the Olympic tourney instead.

Oh, there will still be hockey, but its going to more closely resemble the Spengler Cup.

They are competitive people and an Olympic medal is a big deal.

Save for a few of the geezers, there probably aren't many players in the league today who don't remember the Olympics without NHL players.

The World Cup, while I like it because I'm a hockey fan, is pretty lame. It doesn't have nearly the cachet as soccer, cricket, or rugby WCs.

This is exactly why Olympic soccer sucks. It's not best-on-best.

And now, neither is hockey. I hope the NHL's ratings and attendance during the Olympics plummet.

Soccer at least has a World Cup to see best on best. Hockey has a gimmicky re-branded Canada Cup held at random intervals.

Well they will be magnitudes higher than if the NHL attended no matter what they are.

Yeah, if/as it becomes a tradition on a regular schedule, it will become an event, but that is going to take a while. 8-11 years, like you said.

The World Cup would be important now if they hadn't gone to the Olympics, but they did, and it seems like small potatoes because of it. You'd never get half the country out of bed at 4am to watch Canada take on Sweden in the WCoH final. That's the fun of the Olympics.

I'll watch every minute of every World Cup I'm sure, but it'll never be the same.

Anyway, I am curious to see what they do for a team at the Olympics. Will it be a Spengler Cup kind of squad?

from what i understand...yes. Though they will have a larger pool of players to draw from than just Europe as the Spengler team usually is.

they will be able to take guys from the AHL as well who aren't on NHL deals.

They can also, IIRC, take university/college players without affecting their amateur status.

Canada can still assemble a dominant team...though one would think that Russia has a better pool to draw from than anyone.
