OK, a little background info.

My little brothers (ages 8 and 11) both got mini IPODs or IPOD minis or whatever last Xmas, and I was able to browse through their music collections while I was out there during the summer.

They suck. My Dad has simply synced all of his music onto their IPODs, so they are basically full of obscure Jimmy Buffett music (now I love Jimmy, but when you're 8 years old, you don't get the same enjoyment out of "Growing Older, But Not Up" that you do if you're 25+), crappy stadium/jock jams music (Rednex, that Pat Benetar song I can't think of right now, etc.), and your basic 50 year old parent's pop music from the 80's (Huey Lewis, Dire Straits, Phil Collins).

The music I listened to when I was that age helped to shape me into the person I am today. Probably not as much as the music you listen to as a teenager, but it means something. And as the big bro, I basically just want to spice up their music collections and give them some more diverse music.

But at the same time, they're only 8 and 11. So the stuff they really like is Weird Al, catchy pop-punk tunes (SImple Plan, or Sum 41 kinda stuff), corny hip hop (Skee-Lo, Coolio, etc.), music from video games (Tony Hawk, NHL, etc.), music you'd hear at hockey games (Basement Jaxx, Queen), and I guess just pop music in general.

Now I am pretty much a hip hop junkie. I never listen to the radio, hardly ever, ever watch Muchmusic, and primarily listen to non-mainstream records/mixtapes/LPs that aren't all that accessible.

So CPuck to the rescue, I humbly ask thee for thy help. I need some song suggestions, given what I've described above. Any genre, anything. As long as it's not offensive, and swearing is almost non-existent (Dad and step-Mom are OK with the occasional 'creative context' cuss, but NIN's "Animal," for example, would not go over well).

Some I have thought of over the weekend:

-Ugly Duckling - Taste The Secret LP
-Jet - whatever that album is called (might have to check for explicit lyrics...Carter (8) likes this kind of catchy guitar rock)
-Basement Jaxx/Daft Punk songs
-Some classic Weird Al stuff
-some classic soul/funk/r&b tunes (Aretha's "Respect" is one of theor favorites)
-music from popular movies they would have seen

After this though, I am drawing blanks. Any suggestions would be VERY, VERY helpful.

Beatles, Beatles, Beatles

I WISH I had an older brother who would have introduced me to great music when I was younger.

Doesn't matter how old you are, the Fab 4 transcend all age brackets because of their sheer awesomeness.

Here are some other recommendations. Generally popular bands, but great albums that most people will like, and catchy.

Back In Black - ACDC
Legend - Bob Marley
London Calling - The Clash
Born In The USA - Bruce Springsteen
Rolling Stones - Just grab 40 Licks for now
The Queen Is Dead - The Smiths
Achtung Baby & Joshua Tree - U2

The sooner you can keep children away from Sum41 and Simple Plan, the better our future society will be.

EDIT: Saw that they like the soul/funk: Make sure to plop some Sam Cooke (A Change Is Gonna Come) and some Otis Redding (Sittin On The Dock Of The Bay) on there

If they are into hip hop beats and want clean material 112 and Boyz II Men are good options. If you want to get them in to hip hop or rap NEVER give them a clean version, just wait till they are older.

Whatever you do, do not put any Will Smith songs on their playlist.

Yeah all I know is hip hop; Pharcyde, Souls of Mischief, Jedi Mind Tricks... just not cut out for an 8 year old I guess... Skee-Lo??!!

I'd put a bunch of 70's tunes on there... Beegee's, Supertramp, CCR... they should like that, no??

Hey theres nothing wrong with a little Will Smith! His late 90's stuff was pass poor, but his late 80's early 90's stuff was awesome and his new CD is pretty good to.

Variety.. give them variety

I definately agree with the Beatles.. but maybe avoid the trippy stuff. Revovler is a best bet.

Simon and Garfunkel are some of my favourites too. I would also say stuff like some Metallica, Collective Soul, OLP but only Naveed, everything else from them sucks balls.

For an indie kick Stars or Broken Social Scene, maybe some Death Cab For Cutie.

Foo Fighters are a good bet, same with Pearl Jam and Nirvana (perhaps the Un-Plugged), Johhny Cash, Bob Marley, Bob Dylan, Dire Straights freakin rule, so do Fleetwood Mac..

What else.. Tool, Ben Folds, Beck, Cake, Deftones, Elliott Smith, Fatboy Slim, Zero 7, J5 of course, Massive Attack, Prodigy, NIN, Reel Big Fish (Cheer Up or earlier) , NOFX (punk in drublic), Goldfinger (Hang-Ups or ST)..

LAST BUT NOT LEAST THE WEAKERTHANS!!

Want variety, get some Pogues tunes! Specifically from the album 'If I Should Fall From Grace With God'.

Corb Lund Band is a good local country band. To quote one of their newest songs: "but farmers facin off with gophers, man it ain’t the same as bein' home at the saddledome for the oilers at the flames." How can you go wrong with that? Johnny Cash is a must as well I think.

Gorillaz aren't bad either.

Classic rock stuff like AC-DC, ZZ Top, Def Leppard, Hendrix, Beatles, Stones, Pink Floyd, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Aerosmith, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Led Zepplin, etc are always good. Modest Mouse, Jack Johnson, Everclear, Foo Fighters, Weezer, Sam Roberts, Collective Soul, Chilli Peppers, etc, to name some newer stuff. Big Sugar and Big Wreck (Ian Thornley) are also good.

I am at a total loss when it comes to good punk and hippity hop music.

Hope that helps...

Thanks a lot for the responses everybody, it's a big help. Good suggestions. I guess the trick is putting good music on there that they will actually listen to and enjoy. Duh.

And yeah, I know, an 8 year old with an IPod. Nuts. They're awesome kids, but a little spoiled.

Since you brought up Wierd Al, I can never get enough of his complete video spoof of Micheal Jackson's Beat It video.

For Hip Hop, A Tribe Called Quest. Are they still getting back together? Does anybody know?

Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Temple of the Dog, Nirvana, Janes Addiction, RHCP, Alice in Chains, Blind Melon. Show him the music that happened between boy band eras.

Metric - Old World Underground - another great one catchy, rocky, poppy

Tegan and Sara - If it was you - good ol'Calgary rock

Outkast - Aquemini - awesome, kids should love it low on swears and suggestive lyrics, I think

Dan did I ever tell you that you're my hero.

Definetely get Reel Big Fish. Now, it's ska so a lot of people don't like it, but give it a chance. Try one of these songs:

-Beer
-Take on Me (Aha cover)
-Sellout
-The Setup
-Down In Flames
