Default Playoff Preview: Flames and Ducks

The gap has closed. Gains in forward, defense, goaltending and behind the bench.

Is it enough?

Your last line is the perfect way to top off this story.

Surprised there is no mention of the Ducks leading goal scorer and one of their most skilled forwards.

Richard Rackell 33 goals

He fell through the cracks in my drill down. Wasn't a new player, and wasn't a top five minutes guy.

Ferland was similar in that he's not a top six by minutes and was there and isn't new.

Agreed though, his improvement is just as important as the steps taken by their defense core.

The top line has to be converted to a fourth line with skill … hear me out on this. If Gaudreau doesn’t see a lane get it deep, as that will let Micheal Ferland unleash his fury on the forecheck. Let him turn the puck over and take advantage. If the line gets too cute too often, they’ll make his impact negligible.
If Johnny picks his spots when to carry the puck in, and otherwise does the dump in and let Ferland chase it down - will be key to the effectiveness of this line.

I wonder if Johnny will get deployed in spot duty to mess with the matchups. Sutter and Keenan did it with Iginla.

While, we have a lot of really good players, I think Johnny is the only one with the ability to change the game in an instant.

Gulutzan has generally rolled four lines all season, it will be interesting if he has some tactical moves of his own come playoff time.

Carlyle is a master at line matchups ....would be fun to see GG try and mess with him a bit by doing things like this.

Good stuff as always Bingo.

My single biggest fear in playing the Ducks is the stuff that happens through the neutral zone. They are REALLY good at it and the Flames simply aren't at times and usually against bigger/heavier/tougher teams.

JG is a key as you mention..not just for his offense but for his ability to not turn it over through the middle as he is so prone to do, again, at times.

After months of playing awesome hockey, in fact being one of the best teams in the league, the Flames had a natural letdown over the last few weeks after clinching. This is a headfake. They are young and hungry and built from the blue line out and ready to do some damage.

Excellent analysis in the article, one of your best. Agree with your comments on the Pacific division. Battle of AB will be in round 2 which is going to be nuts.

I think it's one of the biggest keys to the series. The Ducks are a bottle up team, the Flames have speed and a menace in Ferland, but he doesn't get used if they turn it over and leave him chasing.

Gaudreau has skill ... if he has a lane take it, but if he doesn't unleash the Ferklund.

I like how every player has mentioned "whistle to whistle" in their press meetings, that tells you it's getting grilled in to them which is key.

You want to assume NHL coaches are saying and pushing the right buttons, but it's good to see the choir all on the same song sheet before a big game.
