Coyotes arena public funding bill facing serious opposition

Yes ASU pulled out of the proposed Tempe arena, but the Coyotes still pushed on to get public money for a new arena with a location to be named later.

Doesn't look like they have the votes to get the money:

http://www.azcentral.com/story/news/...port/98321466/

Quote:
A plan that would provide $225 million in public financing for a new $395 million Arizona Coyotes arena likely does not have the votes to pass the state Senate, key lawmakers told The Arizona Republic/azcentral Thursday.

Sens. Debbie Lesko, R-Peoria, and John Kavanagh, R-Fountain Hills, said they definitely were going to vote against the plan, while Minority Leader Katie Hobbs, D-Phoenix, said there is little support among the chamber's 13 Democrats. Meanwhile, Senate President Steve Yarbrough, R-Chandler, said he had "serious reservations" about the plan that would allow the National Hockey League team to build an arena in downtown Phoenix or the East Valley.

It would take at least 16 votes to pass Senate Bill 1149 in the GOP-controlled Senate, where Republicans have a 17-13 advantage. Statements from those lawmakers make it appear unlikely that there is enough support to move the plan to the House.

Good. I'm sorry but nothing has been shown that franchise can survive in that market.

They should have moved the second it was revealed Glendale was diverting funds from schools, libraries, and first responders to pay for Gila River.

I for one like the Yotes in the league. They're easy points and they don't steal any of the good free agents. Plus they can't retain any of their good guys, so they sort of act as a talent farm for the league, lol.

Although, I can't think of any player from the Yotes who the Flames benefited from.

You can't think of anyone from the Yotes who the Flames benefited from? Not even the guy who was just traded to the Flames who averaged over 17 minutes with an assist in 2 wins?

Or what about Daymond freaking Langkow?

I don't think they've ever been easy points for Calgary.

Recently the Flames have owned the series but there was a time that organization gave the Flames fits. I believe it was one of the Brent seasons that getting swept by the Coyotes cost the Flames a playoff spot.

I tend to believe if the Coyotes got a downtown arena they would do fine for a US team as when they played in America West they averaged consistently over 14k per game which is about the same as what the Nordiques averaged. The difference being Phoenix is a much larger television market and a more desirable place for players and the league to be.

I tend to remember the games as gritty and close. We may have swept them but I don't remember them being easy games. My memory sucks though.
I agree. Location is a major issue for the Coyotes. I'm sure it's hard to be a hockey fan in the desert and even harder if you have a lengthy drive there and back. I live near Okotoks and I have to pump myself up to get to a game, knowing I have the drive home. Not much of a drive compared to the current Coyotes location (guessing).

The only hope Yotes have in the desert is to hop on board with the Suns in their new arena replacement in the downtown area.

The problem with that it has been reported the Suns want little to do with the Coyotes. If the Suns do team up with the Coyotes they will want majority of the arena related revenues to go to them to the point where it is almost unfair to the Coyotes. This is why the Coyotes are trying so hard to do a separate arena.

They have lost money every year they've been in Phoenix. The excuses have been location, lousy team and poor ownership but even when these aren't a factor they still lose money. They should have been in in S. Ontario years ago except for Bettman's ego.

Are they guaranteed to play the 17-18 season at GRA? I keep hearing that lease was automatically extended Jan 1 for another year. Pack them to Seattle or Quebec already. How many chances does that market need?

It isn't Bettman's ego that keeps them out of southern Ontario. It's the Leafs, who want every single dollar of local media revenue from the richest hockey market in the world. They've been the dog in the manger since Harold Ballard's time.
