Default Washington D.C. Metro area

Hello CP'ers,

The 'Living in the United States' thread got me thinking that I should crowd source some D.C. intel and see if there might be some (normal) hockey people in the area.

For my sins, I am moving from London to D.C. next week for work.

Does anyone have reccomendations for areas to move to?

If you live in the area, up for a beer and some hockey?

I haven't lived there but have visited and what an interesting city. Get out and see the wonderful museums (many of the Smithsonian museums are free), the other sights and the culture. Ford Theatre when Lincoln was assassinated is cool. The iconic political buildings like the White House and the Lincoln Memorial are wonderful. It's one of the most vibrant, fascinating cities I've visited. You'll have a blast.

That's gonna depend on a lot of things - size, type, price, distance to certain things like say the metro, etc.

Personally, I think the DC area is awesome. It's a great and seemingly very liveable city.

I just moved to the area about a week ago and absolutely love it here. If you are from London, however, it might not be as lively as you're used to.

In terms of where to live, it all depends on what you need and what type of budget you're looking at. Also where you're going to be working is important. I personally like Northern Virginia the most. I got a place in Old Town Alexandria that's a block away from the metro and close to countless restaurants and shops. If you need some more space, check out the further out suburbs in Virginia or Maryland. They're all good areas, it just depends on what you want to spend and how close you want to be to DC. Whatever you do, though, don't live in SE DC. If you plan on living in the city, try to stay in the NW (which is actually the majority of the city).

Good choice. Alexandria is a beautiful historic city.

I don't know the area around Nats park is getting pretty nice. I wouldn't mind living in that area if I was younger. https://www.washingtonpost.com/sport...=.3deca2c0ab24

I’m always amazed these sportscasters and announcers can call the game with McDavid’s **** in their mouths all the time.

Thanks for the replies all.

After doing a lot more due diligence we are also going to move to Old Town as well. We will rent at first and make a decision on buying after getting to know things a bit better. Our options have been pretty limited house wise as we have a large dog (who the good folks here at CP helped me name).

Are you commuting into the district from Old Town?

I'm a born and bred Calgarian so the pace should be good. London is tiring.

Let me know if you're up for a beer sometime. Or even better the Oilers / Caps game later on Feb

PM me when you get settled in. I'd love to meet up for beers or watch the Caps crush your Oilers.

_Q_ and Oilforever check out this place if you get a chance:

Jack Rose Dining Saloon.... amazing for Bourbon and Beers.

Georgetown is great, especially off the tourist strip.

Also, Off the Record in the Basement right next to the White House is a must, you can cut the nostalgia and backroom deals with a knife.
