Recommend a (cheap) locksmith.

Hey,

Have a non-emergency locksmith problem. Already called a few places and didn't like the numbers I was hearing, so was wondering if good ol' CP could point me in the right direction.

Basically I just need my mailbox open. Lost the last key and can't get inside. Already called both Canada Post and the condo board so there's no problem about me overstepping my bounds or doing anything illegal. It's up to me to fix.

I know this probably means that they will have to replace the lock and provide new keys and that increases the price obviously, but if anyone could point me to something that doesn't come with a huge service fee just for showing up, that would help. I have heard in the range of $35+ to $150.00 so far. Frankly, it's the 35+ that scares me more! Haha.

Last time I had that done on a condo box, they drilled the lock, installed new tumbler and supplied 3 new keys. $100. Can't remember who did it, but thought I'd let you know the price for reference.

What locks? How many?

If you take them into a locksmith I think they charge $20 or less to rekey them. $100+ to come out to you.

$25-$40 per deadbolt to completely replace them yourself.

3 locks. Front door, garage door and back door. Lately our keys have been sticking and not going all the way in. The front door handle is also a bit loose so we were debating have that replaced as well.

You should be able to tighten the handle with a screwdriver and I bet that powdered graphite will give you many more years of use out of the locks. Powdered graphite is about $4 for a tube at home depot or lowes etc.

Silicone spray also works very well for locks. You will be amazed how much better they work with a quick spray.

Thanks for the tips about spraying the locks. I never realized that was an option. I will give it a try as that would be much cheaper than calling a locksmith.

There's four places. There's the Lock Hut, that's on third.
There's Lock's-R-Us, that's on third too. You got Put-Your-Key-There.
That's on third. Lock Low, Sweet Keyhole... Matter of fact, they're all in the same complex; it's the Lock complex on third.
