He's been unbelievable. He's flown past my expectations. He's not just a passenger on that line either, he really helps drive play for a line that has been one of the best in hockey.

"At a high level, there are a lot of similarities between Matthews and Tkachuk. Each is 19 and each was born in Scottsdale, although Tkachuk moved to St. Louis at age 3 after his father, Keith Tkachuk, was traded to the Blues on Feb. 25, 2007"
pretty crazy for a 13year old to be performing at such a high level.

With the way Matthews and Laine have been playing, I don't think Tkachuk has a chance at the Calder. Similar to when Dion Phaneuf was a finalist. But it's good to be in the conversation though.

Nice story for sure, but Tkachuk has no chance against Laine and Matthews.

Yeah, why do our amazing rookies always have to start their careers during a phenom's rookie season? Bad luck.

Right now I have him 4th after Matthews, Laine, and Werenski. He's definitely in the mix and I could see him finishing third by the end of the year, but right now I think it's Matthews/Laine's to lose.

Nice to see recognition from outside Calgary. But even if all the Toronto votes get split amongst their candidates, Laine will take it before Tkachuk. A top 5 finish in voting is about the best case scenario.

Wennberg off CBJ? He isn't a rookie.

Matthews may have the edge with his 21 goals, but Tkachuk has been a more effective playmaker, is handling a tougher defensive assignment, has better shot-based metrics and is the best in the League at drawing penalties. Add those up, and they could be enough for Tkachuk to become a factor in the Calder race.
|
I don't think he'll get a nomination either. But in the end it doesn't matter. The Calder is a nice award to get, but it means nothing in the long run and is not a guarantee of a players future success.
What does matter is what stated in the quote above. Playing tough defensive assignments, great shot metrics and drawing penalties. If he can keep it up year after year, he'll be a star.

This is a great stat:

But he draws even more penalties than he takes: Tkachuk leads the League with 2.93 penalties drawn per 60 minutes, which makes his style of play an overall net positive for Calgary.
|
But yeah, in a season with Matthews, Laine, Werenski, and Murray all having standout campaigns, it will be a surprise if Tkachuk is even a finalist.

Marner has to round out top 5 right now?
He shouldn't be ruled out yet either

Guy was a streal his draft year. Should have gone top 5 easy.

Tough to say. He looks better than Strome right now but I am sure the Leafs are happy with Marner and no way you take him over McDavid and Eichel. Perhaps he ends up better than Hanifin but that is just a ridiculously deep top 10. Provorov is an absolute beast as well

I think people forget that Matt Murray is a rookie.
In his 17GS:
13-3-1
Win% - 1st (.765)
SV% - T6th (.928)
GAA - 8th (2.18)
For whatever reason though, Pittsburgh is giving the majority of starts (23) to Fleury, despite Murray crushing him in every statistical category, including win%. Fleury's SV% and GAA are outside of the top 30.
If Murray can finish the season with >40GP while maintaining his play, then I think he needs to be 1 of the nominations.
Matthews
Werenski
Murray
