Heh, just a running joke from the Game day thread.
As for the game takes I really agree that johnny needs to stop overreacting to the missed calls. I'm beginning to wonder if it wrecks his focus and is hurting his game. Just let it go and play.
Tkachuk is a gamer, that pass was awesome but also he is drawing penalties like a vet, a little grab on a stick and you get the hooking call. Learning a lot from his line mates and just natural skill. Haven't been this excited about a power forward on the Flames since Iginla.
I know Bennett is getting a lot of flack in the PGT but I thought he had a decent if unspectacular night. It's good to see fancy stats backing that up. He is missing the offensive edge to his game but I trust him a lot more on both ends of the ice than I did last year. Off year for him but not willing to give up yet.

Nice write up. Thank you. Flames really dominated Florida, who were undermanned in the first place. Nice to see.
Johnny needs to cut this crap out soon. He's not doing himself any favors and constantly showing up the officials just contributes to the whole penalty problem the team is facing. And now the entire league knows what it takes to get him off his game.

To egregiously slash, trip and cross-check him because there will be no consequences?
It's embarrassing the amount of abuse he's allowed to take - right in front of the officials - with no calls on blatant penalties.
I didn't see him do anything wrong last night except get slashed on the hand several times, tripped 2/3 times, high sticked and cross-checked in the numbers.
The amount of abuse he takes that isn't called far outweighs any embellishing / complaining on his part.

He is getting abused a lot, there's no doubt about it. But he has a choice on what to do about it, he can let it get under his skin or he can use it. Honestly one of the best things I saw out of Gaudreau last night was when he got crosschecked in the corner and instead of looking to the ref he just started crosschecking back. Pretty hard too, almost like he was challenging the ref to call him after not calling it against him. That intensity was good to see and using the fire from being taken advantage of.
The refs need to start getting this right, but if they don't there isn't an option for him. It's either let it get to him or fight through it and use it. I think last night he took a big step in just saying "F it, lets go!" and I thought he had a good night because of it, even if he didn't hit the scoreboard.

That's all well and good, but I still maintain after watching these recent games, that isn't the major factor that sticks out for discussion sake.
If you come away from watching a game like last night first and foremost with the attitude "Gaudreau needs to stop complaining about the blatant attempts to injure him" as your talking point over "The NHL officials are a joke and our star player is going to be injured - again - because of their outright negligence"... you need to get your priorities straight (not saying you in specific).
The negligence on the part of the officials is THAT bad at this point.

The officiating is bad league wide and every star player gets targeted. It does him zero favours to whine and show up the refs.

I haven't seen any star players get this hacked (to the point of injury) with next to no consistent calls. It's a joke.
Again, the issue of the persistent, blatant abuse far, far outweighs his protests about it, which at this point are massively over-blown by the few repeat complainers here.

So you think Johnny gets targeted more than the star players on literally every team?

I think we all know Johnny isn't getting the calls he should be, the point is that complaining that the refs aren't doing their job and letting it get to you is not a solution. This is the way it is right now and he has to play through it.

I absolutely agree. The reffing as been extra hard on him for whatever reason. This isn't his first season and I don't remember him taking this amount of abuse over the last couple years without getting a call. Then living in Edmonton I turn on an Oilers game and see McDavid get calls going his way for barely a tap or hook. It's completely unfair and it should be discussed.
I just think it is out of Johnny's hands. He tried discussing calls with refs early in the season, it turned into constant complaining because it didn't get better. The problem is the refs are completely unaccountable from a fan's and probably the players perspective. The only thing he can control is his reaction to it and my point was just that he needs to find a way to deal with it because it isn't getting better and the refs don't seem to care.
Is the solution for the team to start getting vocal and take some fines to get the message out? Maybe. They can't even play protection for him as they just end up shorthanded for playing it strong. It's really a no win and the absolute joke of reffing is to blame. But for him to play his best he has to stop looking to the ref after every missed call and just ignore it because nothing else seems to be working.

I think there are clearly more missed penalties on him, and that it's gotten worse and worse this season.

and the more he complains, the worse it gets. Solution, stop complaining and carry his stick higher. Become pro-active.

I really don't think he complains even close to as much as a few of you keep parroting.
I also don't think it can get much worse unless the officials going to start hacking at him themselves. The refs are being as negligent as possible lately.

Sorry GJG but I generally believe that having a victim mentality rarely works out well for the "victim" in any context. Johnny's approach isn't helping him get any more calls. It's just the opposite.

Johnny carries and holds on to the puck more than pretty much any other player in the league, which leads to more slashes against him than against most players.

You aren't watching then, because he complains almost every shift.
That said, I do believe he takes an awful lot of punishment that doesn't get called but I'm with Vulcan on this one, stop complaining and be pro-active about it till calls start going your way again.
