For those of you that are in High School ( however many of us there are ) what courses are you taking? I'm in Journalism 10, French 10, Math 10 Pure, and Science 10, and what school did/do you go to?

Thought it would be interesting to see where you guys went and what you took...

Well I am gonna take math 10. I better get 100% or I'll be angry.

Take it from an oldie, take the hardest stuff, things that interest you and things that will help you later on in life.

Do they still have math 31?

What is science 10? Shouldn't it be bio chem and physics 10?
It's just Science 10...Bio, Chem and Physics get seperated out at the 20 level. Pretty sure they still have Math 31 (well, they did when I graduated WAY back in '01)

Jebus what the hell is math 10? My memory only functions in increments of 5 years now.

Do what I did (in semesters): Gr 10: Math 13-23, Gr 11: Math 33-33, Gr 12:kicked out-30 Retunring year: Math 30-31. You'd think I would be REALLY good at high School math right now. The only thing I remember though, is something to do with the quadratic equation and jamaican red hair at the Renert tutorials.

Thank god for google and hired engineers!!

Dude/(Dudette?)

I will assume dude....

Math, even as little as Math 11 is crucial in the real world. Making more than one bad calculation in two will only get your crucified in the long run.

One fun example might be the 38 year old MILF you are bopping that has a 16 year old son that finds out about it. Even though you might be 190 pounds, and two years older, what are the odds that this 170 pound light weight won't kick the crap out of you?

Seriously, of all the studies in high school, math is one of the most important, if not THE most important. There are very few industries or professions where getting less than one in two questions right is viable... except politics.

Once again Peter12, the most simplest of posts goes WAY over your head. So be it. Lucky to be you, eh? http://www.hardcoreware.net/forum/im...milies/2up.gif

Anyone can become good at math, I was stressing the importance of learning it, not the posters inability to learn it to this point in his/her existance.

Personally I got it... and it has been instrumental in almost everything I have done in the working world.

Dude, you misunderstand what I posted, and I may have misunderstood what YOU posted.

Math IS crutial, regardless of what you do. 50 points on the buck ain't goin' to cut it. Period.

As for you getting a diploma of technology, cool, but you saying you didn't need hardcore math (ie a 50 point grade in Math 11) to get there would worry me IF I were your perspective employer. Let alone this mentality....

Quote:

Nothing is funny in the real world about shinguard like that. Want to put THAT on your resume? I didn't think so either.

Again, this is NOT jumping on you. Consider this an out of the blue internet wake up call as to what a perspective employer would think of your attitude in this matter. Let alone the personal aspects for finances, etc.

I had a 49.5% in Math 30 and I'm doing just fine in life, nothing in everyday life a pocket calculator won't solve, I don't aspire to be an engineer like the rest of CP. :P

Shawnski,

None of my previous or current employers have asked me for my math grades or any grades, nor am I in a career where I will ever be asked what my math grades will be, so as far as that, I am not worried in the slightest.

As far as my attitude towards this matter is concerned, I said earlier, I wasnt proud of it, I just thought it was funny and when it comes to shinguard like this in the real world, I think its fine to laugh. No, I would not put my bad grades on a resume, I would rely on my people skills to do all the talking for me. Thats where my strenghts are, and this is why I chose a career path that put an emphasis on one to one communication.

I am not downplayin the importance of good grades at all, but as far as I am concerned, I am gonna be fine, and I have never had trouble finding a job based on my grades or my mentality towards the importance of them as well.

For the record, I am in Radio broadcasting and am tryin to find a on air gig and if a program director would choose a guy based on grades rather than personality, then good for him, I will prove to him that he made a mistake and do my thing elsewhere.

I don't get the whole 10/20/30 thing the Alberta school system has going on.

Does it not make infinitely more sense to go 10/11/12, since that's the way the grades go?

And as for advice for high school students, do as little as possible to get into university. Don't be a hero and take a full schedule unless you're really trying to get into Harvard or something. If you're just going to go to UofC or something, just do what needs to be done and nothing more. Because doing anything more than is required is just a waste of time.

My grade 12 schedule, after (during I guess) which I recieved early acceptance with scholarship to UVic:

Semester 1:

Math 12
Physics 12
English 12
PE 11/12

Semester 2:

Chemistry 12
PE 11/12
Cooking 11/12

4 provincially examinable courses required, 4 provincially examinable courses taken. None of this History, Geography, Biology, French, Journalism bullshinguard. Just what's needed.

Well you're talking to one engineer that doesn't remember shinguard from any of his highschool or university math/calculus courses, even after hitting triple digits in Math30 and 31.

Its not important at all to remember what you learned. Whats important is that you learned how to think, and that you learned how to learn.

let me settle this math arugment for all of you:

For those that almost failed math, you're stupid because you almost failed math

For those that think that you have to have high school math inorder to function in the world today, you're stupid because you think you need to know the quadratic forumla in everyday life

For those who fall into neither category, you're stupid because you neither failed math nor do you think it's important.

THERE everybody's stupid (but me)... happy now?

Actually it's been 2.

Trust me you take engineering (as he and I both did, together I might add), and you don't need to remember details, it's the process that matters.

I don't have to remember how to do every type of problem I ever did in university, or HS for that matter because I learned how to figure out how to do them.

I don't get what you're saying Shawnski. I failed math in high school, and struggled through stats in Uni. Does this mean I won't get a decent job because I'm mathematically challenged?

Yeah I did Electrical Engineering..

And yeah, I never remember details, I can't memorize worth crap but I never need to.

That's why I hate interviews with technical questions

My point was that schools nowadays don't each those skills hulk was talking about; skills like thinking and learning. They focus instead on helping them get the grade they need to move on and eventually get out of school with no analytical skills, no ability to research, and no ability to think outside the predefined box that was setup for them.

Ok maybe it's not all that bad, but talking to the young people I know I can't say I'm very impressed with today's education system.
