Sure players went after other players who made clean hits in 2007 too. Just not every hit.
Phaneuf didn't have to fight anyone after he hit Hamel.
Edit: and again, I don't mean players didn't fight after an open ice hit 10 years ago. It happened often. It's just today 100% of open ice hits require you to fight.
People talk about the NHL taking hits out of the game, but this culture of a hard hit being equal to open season on the player delivering the hit seems to be at least as big of a culprit.
Looks like quite the ending to the game. anyone watch?

Open ice hitting is truly dead. You can't make one anymore without being forced to fight.
Scheiffele crossed checked McCabe in the face ...hopefully he got a penalty for that, too.
I'd like to see an instigator penalty for the guy that jumps the hitter in these cases, that might curb this a bit.
To me, this really takes away from the toughness of the game

Wow, the thread title maybe had me expecting more, but it looks like McCabe stood him up more than anything. Of course it was a big hit, but besides deciding to step into him and make the hit I didn't see anything egregious on McCabe's part, if anything there's a lot of players in this league that would have done a lot worse if given the same opportunity. Just an unfortunate injury as a result.

Been that way for 70+ years but people are pretending it's a new thing
The game is less physical then it's probably ever been. That's fine I really don't want to see guys concussed, careers ruined, brain damage leading to problems later in life including suicide etc.. but scoring is also low low low. I'd take the trade off for a faster paced high scoring game, less stick work but the NHL is soft AF.

An instigator is not enough to stop that. It is ridiculous that a guy gets jumped for throwing a clean hit. I would say 5 minute penalty, a game misconduct, and a 1 game suspension is a better idea.
