Default WJC: Preliminary Round Day 5.

Just 2 games and all the teams with Flames prospects have the day off.

Sweden has already won Group A. The winner of Group B will be winner of USA vs CAN tomorrow.

The 2 games today involve perhaps the 4 weakest teams on paper at the tournament that most thought would be playing to avoid relegation.

However, if you had to watch one game today, my choice would be Switzerland vs Denmark.

Denmark is a great story at the tourney. Having won 2 games in a row, they are poised to have their best WJC in the history of the tournament. You can't help but to cheer for them with their exuberant celebrations and massive underdog status.

Watching Switzerland again also gives you another chance to watch Nico Hischier, who has been dynamic and fun to watch. He is showing why some say he should be in the conversation for 1st OA at the 2017 draft.

Lastly the Denmark vs Switzerland game also will have an impact for Finland. The only path for the Fins to play in the quarterfinals is for Denmark to beat Switzerland and then the Fins to beat Switzerland tomorrow. If you are a fan of Suomi, then you are also a fan of Denmark today.

Slovakia vs Latvia is hard to get excited for. Latvia has been a punching bag for everyone in group B with a goals differential of -21 in 3 games. Slovakia isn't a great team this year either but should be a lot better than Latvia. Latvia needs to win this game and hope the Russians beat Slovakia tomorrow to advance to the quarterfinals.

Group A
Switzerland vs Denmark - 3pm MT TSN

Group B
Slovakia vs Latvia - 5:30pm MT TSN

Denmark has a 3-0 lead with just over 5 minutes left in the 1st period.

3-1 Danes after the 1st period. As I type, Denmark just made it 4-1 early in period 2.

Switzerland poised to take a 5-4 lead (goal is under review).

Edit: Still tied (goal is waved off) - Not sure I agree with that call.

I think the announcers are confused. Finland is relegated no matter what now that it is in OT, correct?

EDIT: Whoops, NM. Wins are worth 3.

Switzerland has 3 points now so I think Finland could still tie them on pats and get in on tiebreaker maybe?

Yep. Swiss would only get 1 point here, and with a regulation win tomorrow Finland would tie, but have the tie-breaker.

Going to a shootout - If Switzerland wins the shootout, the Finns go to relegation.

Swiss really took it to the Danes in 3rd period and OT. I'm sure fatigue is not an insignificant factor for Denmark (4 games in 5 nights). After extra rest they will be playing one of the big 3 in first playoff round.

If they were to win a game there, now that would be an upset.

Drama in Team Finland. Coach Jukka Rautakorpi and 3 assistant coaches fired just now. Jussi Ahokas is the new head coach starting from now.

See, I dont get this. They're eliminated right? They're going home?

Fire him when he gets home. Do an exit interview.

The tournament is over. Try and act like this isnt Comedy Club Amateur Hour.

Damage done. Move along.

What is to be gained by firing him immediately? Saving his airfare?
