Flames If the Flames are still in contention at the Trade Deadline...

...who should they target? We're coming up to two months before the TDL, and the Flames currently sit in the second wildcard spot (after tonight's LA-NSH game -- if said game goes to OT, the Flames move to 9th in the West). If the Flames wanted to load up for a playoff run, and fill some holes, who would you go after?

I think that these are the Flames' biggest needs:

- #4 defenseman
- Top-six winger
- Maybe a goalie?

I know that guys like Iginla and Jagr have been frequently discussed here, but who else could the Flames realistically target? How about guys like Cammalleri, Vanek, etc.

Also, who would you be open to giving up?

They need a 2nd line player. Defence is fine

Maybe Brodie for Kadri?

Cams for a 3rd. Not sure Burke would give up more though

Don't give up any futures for a deadline rental.

That's a bad idea at this point in the rebuild. This team isn't a legit contender yet.

We'd probably have to add Hamilton, but it'd be worth it. Right LargeAlbacore?

Defense is not fine. Totally lacking a second pairing guy

I agree but the thread was a hypothetical situation that we are still in the race. If that happens I probably still wouldn't make a move to add to this team for a run in the playoffs. I would look more as experienced gained for young guys playing playoff games

But if we are cemented in a playoff spot at the deadline a 3rd doesn't kill your franchises rebuild to get better for the playoffs

Way more expensive to add a top 4 dman at the deadline. I'm more for a cheap add then trying to pretend we are cup contenders

Top line winger that shoots right.

Top 4 dman under 30.

Both of those are very expensive deadline acquisitions. Not sure either of them exist as viable options. I think we need the forward first. The dman might have to come from our system.

I don't mind moving picks for good players. The prospect base is in pretty decent shape, not to mention all of our top players are 19-27.

They do what they did in 2015 and sell off pending UFA's and hope they still have enough to make it. The Flames won't be in a position to be trading for rentals for another year or two. Fix the D in the offseason through trade or free agency. I don't think the wing is as big a deal as the D so I think that could be addressed during free agency.

Is there even a point in discussing a top 4 dman at the deadline, since one of those top 4 players will inevitably end up in Vegas a few months later?

Don't think we are past the point of being sellers at the deadline just yet. Even if the Flames are in a tenuous spot I'd still like to see Wideman, Engelland, and possibly Elliott moved for picks and/or prospects.

Not really.

Bottom line is the types of players we need should only be coming from within our system. The trade and UFA market should be almost exclusively for 2nd tier players. Getting top end players by that means hindrances your team long term either in the form of cap space (UFA) or assets (trade). Both scenarios are very rarely a success. You're better to focus on developing star talent from your prospect base than to go chasing it through secondary markets.

Hamilton trades are a rare breed. And it's the only type (outside of unloading dead weight) that the Flames should be making IMO.

Pending UFA Defensemen from teams that are likely out of the playoffs come the Deadline

from this: http://www.spotrac.com/nhl/free-agents/defenseman/ufa/

Guys to Target :

Dimitri Kulikov - Buffalo - Shoots Left
Michael Stone - Arizona - Shoots right
Cody Franson - Buffalo - Shoots Right

There are also a lot of depth dmen. But i would try and target one of those 3. CAn even ship out Wideman and flip that Assets for one of these guys

I still don't understand these Brodie for Kadri trade proposals. Trading Brodie would open up a massive hole on our defense that would set us back instead of push us towards the playoffs, especially for another center when we have Monahan, Bennett, and Backlund.

Trading Brodie period is foolish. Unless a franchise piece is coming back, he's untouchable. Especially not for Nazim Kadri

Vrbata is a guy I would look at. Having a very good year in ARZ and fills a need. Dirt cheap on a one year deal too.

#4 defenseman
- Top-six winger
- Maybe a goalie

Unless the Flames succeeded in getting all 3 of these, I doubt these pieces would make the Flames a contender. The Flames are quite far off from teams like Chicago, Pittsburgh, or Washington.

If the Flames acquire these pieces without subtracting existing pieces in the current lineup, they'll be forced to give up on the future.

As of now, the Flames are still rebuilding. They're clearly not a rebuilding team, and prospect/player development is the priority.
