He probably accepted in absentia and delivered a pre-recorded speech.

13 words? I think thats being generous.
What I love the most is that in our current media's pattern of needing constant flows of information from athletes Kipper just did his own thing and there was absolutely nothing anyone could do about it.
Shine on you crazy diamond!

Classic Kipper.
Congrats to him. If the Flames won in 2004, he'd probably be in the Toronto HHoF. Still think he might get in someday, though it's a long, long shot.

But 13 Finnish words could be a whole paragraph in English.

I remember when he sent the little kid to collect his Vezina.
Kiprusoff made me a fan of this team. I lived in Calgary for four years prior to the Cup run - Iggy's first 50 goal season did nothing for me. I don't think I watched ten games of it. Whatever you do in this game, if you don't have a goalie, you've got no chance.
But then this #34 guy showed up. And you could just tell he was different. partially because the puck so rarely ended up in the net, but it was more than that. Kipper had a phenomenal mental makeup. His first season, his record after giving up 4+ was the stuff of legend - he would come back to next game and give a team absolutely nothing.
He was also a supremely underrated puck handler. He didn't make the Brodeur/Turco type plays but he was elite at moving the puck to his D in the corner at the right time. I'm having a lot of trouble remembering a time that he really cost the team with his puck handling.
Failing to find a capable backup was nearly as grievous ab offence as failing to find Iggy a proper elite player to run with. There would be moments in the later years, usually around game 60, when he would let in goals that defied explanation - he let them in because he was tired. A Kiprusoff who played 60-65 games would have been devastating come playoff time.
Speaking of. The 06-07 playoff series against the Red Wings should have been over in 3. That's how outclassed Calgary was. Kiprusoff threw up a seasons worth of highlights in six games. And we still got crushed. The Flames were a David Moss miss away from going seven games, but to this day I would only give that group under Playfair a 1/10 chance of winning that game on the road.
Love that his final win was against the Ducks. And oh if only it had been a shutout... Probably won't get into the HHOF over here, but his sweater needs to be retired. We probably don't even need to push the start back.
Godspeed, Miikka. You were the greatest goalie I ever had the privilege to see live.

I agree with everything else you said.... but in his early days Kipper was well below average at handling the puck lol. In fact he was downright bad. He did get better over time though.

By far, my most favourite Flame of all time. I was lucky to meet him personally and spent about an hour talking to him at an event, because he was too shy to hang around large groups of people and just sat in the corner by himself. We spoke about Finland, about fishing, about San Jose and Darryl Sutter. Heck, he even called my 11-yr old kid on my cell phone and talked to him for 10 minutes looking genuinely into the conversation and showing no irritation at all... I have three named Kiprusoff jerseys myself, plus my kids and my wife have them as well... Well-deserved, Kipper. Can't wait to see his name on the rafters at the Saddledome.
