Default Edmonton Hotels

Hey folks,

My kid's hockey team was accepted for a tournament in Edmonton in March. I need to look into finding some decent accommodations for the team. What are some good recommendations for hotels in Edmonton? The only requirements at this point are a pool (with a waterslide preferably) and good accessibility (the tournament coordinators haven't said which rinks will be used but apparently it could be any rink across Edmonton.)

The tournament has a list of 16 hotels that apparently can offer discounted rates for the tournament but the hotels are spread across the city so I don't know which to go with.

If you have any good hotel recommendations let me know.

Nice pool here, not for from West Ed:

  • Fantastic location in Edmonton, minutes from West Edmonton Mall
  • Situated 10 minutes from downtown Edmonton's city center
IIRC, they give every guest fresh warm cookies at the front desk. Buffet is top notch, but not included. The hotel is in a kind of industrial area north of West Ed Mall, but there was a Fat Burger nearby.

Cool. That hotel is on the tournament list so I'll look into this some more. No waterslide though. Kids love that stuff.

Hey, I have stayed here for business on many occasions! Used to be the old Mayfield Inn and parking can still be a challenge on show nights at the Mayfield Dinner theatre. But the rooms are great and the breakfast buffet is awesome! The selection is amazing and I always end up eating too much. Try to get a room in the north tower. Last time I stayed here (late August I think), much of the South Tower remains unrenovated.

We stayed at the Wingate West Edmonton. Had a corkscrew waterside that the kids went nuts on. Hopefully you're not like us and playing three Calgary teams.

Edit if you stay there don't stay over the conference rooms. Booming music possible until midnight like we had.

it is a difficult decision until you get the tournament schedule, because you don't want to be driving all over town if you can avoid it.

Breakfast buffets are nice because it is highly likely you will have one early morning game.

Waiting for the schedule is unfortunately not really an option. The tournament website says that schedules will be available two to three weeks before the tournament which is kind of short notice for booking 15 to 20 rooms as a team unless we decide to let each family figure things out for themselves.

Buffet breakfast is certainly a good thing. They are opening a new Hyatt Place in the West Edmonton area which would be on my list. I've stayed at a couple of Hyatt Place hotels and they easily have the best free breakfast of any chain hotel.

Sutton Place is downtown, close to Rogers Place. It has a pool from what I recall (at the top of the tower which is pretty cool) but no waterslides. If you won't know your schedule then my advice would be to stay in a place that has close access to either Anthony Henday Drive or Whitemud Drive both of which would provide good access to most places in the city. If you stick close to Gateway Blvd / Calgary Trail you will be basically in the middle of the city (E/W) and if you are on either Henday or Whitemud you would be able to get around town pretty quickly.

^ further to the above, I'd likely eliminate places close to west ed due to additional traffic headaches - and if you have lots of driving to do, you won't have time to visit the only thing in Edmonton worth seeing - the mall (unless you appreciate a good tire fire)

Wingate West Ed apparently doesn't have room to accommodate our team. They are hosting two other hockey teams already that weekend. So I need to look elsewhere.

Never stayed at this property, but unless you (and the entire hockey team) have at least Gold Hilton honors status*--or you book a room that includes breakfast as part of its rate---breakfast will not be free. So I'd avoid it just for that reason alone.

* And this further presumes that you have selected breakfast instead of points as your preferred amenity benefit.

Is this the SWAT tournament? My son's team is going too, I look forward to the results of this thread.

Yeah, this is SWAT. We are novice level. I've already checked with three hotels and none of them can offer a group booking/group rate.

Seriously? Is that standard for tournaments nowadays?

I'd find a new tournament.
