Shinkaruk sent back to Stockton
Calgary Flames @NHLFlames
The #Flames have assigned Hunter Shinkaruk to the @AHLHeat ~
Gives the Flames a 22 man roster right now. It also gives them the roster space to activate Bouma without sending anyone else down.

Probably best to keep him on that top line, producing and developing.

He won't succeed unless he plays with top 6 guys. Is he a top 6 player? I have my doubts.

Whatever your feelings about Shinkaruk, pretty telling that he didn't grab the opportunity and/or the organization didn't turn to him with Gaudreau injured.

So far, Granlund is better but Shinkaruk is still young.

As of now? Not a chance.
He has the compete level of Colborne minus the skill. If he doesn't start competing and showing some effort at the very least he won't ever be an NHLer.
He's still young but with his supposed attitude problems and entitlement issues I doubt he will ever learn. He had a great opportunity this year and not only didn't he take a step forward I think he actually took one backwards.

And so is Granlund. He's only a year older.

If Granlund was still with the Flames there probably isn't a spot for Tkachuk.
I am fine, more than fine, with that trade.

So am I. An NHL tweener for a AHL tweener. Not the greatest trade, and would have happily taken a second rounder like what we got for Baertschi or even a third rounder but that trade isn't hurting us in any way.
I didn't like him at the draft and still don't like him. His compete level is a joke and he hasn't changed one bit. He thinks he's better than he is and I doubt he would ever be a top 6 player and too small and weak for bottom 6.
Only way he saves his career is to show a much better effort level and compete in the corners and play in the defensive zone. He plays like Iginla did in the last few years here. Well Iginla had scored 500 goals by then so a little lazy play at his age was expected but for a 22 year old trying to take a job away from someone? Good luck with that.

Granlund trade was a risk at the time. Trading a sure fire 4th liner for potentially a top 6 forward. Probably won't work out but nothing to lose sleep over. You win some trades, you lose some. You just have to hope the wins are the big trades (Hamilton) and the loses are the smaller ones.

Granlund isn't going to carry a team.. is not like we traded Paul Byron here guys..
Honestly though, was worth the risk and they are two very irrelevant guys, perhaps Shinkaruk can become an NHL regular but he certainly has disappointed thus far.

I guess what I would like to know is why the people who supported Shinkaruk, did so with such fervor? What did you see (and still see) that the rest of us didn't? Honest question. He could still pan out, but I'm curious as to what I must be missing.

The only reason Granlund is playing, IMO, is that the Nucks are seriously lacking in depth.
I don't miss him in the slightest. If he carves out a decent career, good on him, but I doubt he could crack our lineup at this point - and certainly not as anything but a 4th liner.

I think the main reason why I was in favour of the trade is the fact that Shinkaruk possesses more top end skill than Granlund. Of course, Shinkaruk has yet to display this skill at the NHL level and there are doubts that he ever will, but if he can put it together, it could be a nice asset down the road for the Flames. As far as Granlund is concerned, I view him as a player that is quite easily replaced. That's the main reason I liked the swap.
