Mulroney upset about tapes/book

I'm kind of torn about this one. I have no sympathy for politicians and generally love watching them back-pedal when they say stupid things. But these were tapes made during private conversations that he (Peter Newman) is releasing to the public. It'd be like taping the conversation in the hockey locker room and playing it for your buddies wife. You just don't do it. Well, thats my view anyhow.

These were NOT private conversations. Peter C. Newman signed a deal in 1983 which gave him unlimited access to record and publish what Mulroney said. If the former-PM is upset that his words now make him look foolish, he should have been more careful at the time.

It's kind of like the movie Almost Famous, where the rock band got friendly with the reporter from Rolling Stone and told him things they didn't want in the media, then they got furious when he included all of it in his story.

Like all things in life, its never black and white.

The author did the interview with the intent on writing a book based on fact, not just the tapes. Mulruney agreed and everything is on tape.

Author for some reason couldnt get access to the docs he says and wrote this book instead.

Personally I like the guy - I cant really see anything worse that he has done than what the goverment who replaced him has done. Which would normally be grounds to get rid of the current govt but Canada has forever changed

Brian did the interviews, now he has to live with them.

Personally anything bad says about Trudeau cant be all bad can it?

Really all this will do is make Mulroney look like an *******. So basically nothing changes.

In an article in another paper yesterday mentioned an exchange that went something like "that tape recorder isn't on, is it"? after he said something stupid.

Newman was a journalist/author with a tape recorder and an agreement to write a book about Mulroney in the future. If he thought he was just gabbing with a friend, he's stupid. But he's not stupid, we know that, so he's just trying to backpedal now.

Mulroney is lying if he said he didn't know he was being taped.

And I don't think off the record conversations are the kind that get taped.

I generally liked Mulroney - in spite of his problem with bombast - but he's crying crocodile tears on this one.
