Default 2011 TransLink Daypass Still Valid?

Quick question that maybe someone here knows the answer to:

I found a $9.00 TransLink day pass that I bought in 2011 (but obviously never used). I haven't been to Vancouver in years, but my mother will be there as part of an Alaskan cruise this summer. I was thinking about giving her the day pass to use, but research online indicates that (1) Vancouver's transit fares aren't what they used to be; and (2) TransLink now uses some sort of contact card for fare payments.

So, that being the case, does anyone know if I (or my mom, or anyone for that matter) can still use a day pass from 2011 on Vancouver's public transit system in 2016 or 2017? Does this card still have any value, or is it not much more than a bookmark now?

Thanks.

If it doesn't work, you could squirrel away 5 cents a day until her trip and buy her a whole new one.

Called TransLink. Short answer is that I have to go to the Chinatown station, buy a compass card, and hand the old day pass over to customer service, who will then apply the $9 face value of the day pass to the compass card.

Was gonna say this...Translink doesn't use pre-bought day and single passes anymore. You have to buy a compass card and put a balance on it. It's a better system...assuming you don't lose the card. I think you can cancel lost cards online, but they cost $6 for a new one.

That doesn't sound like a particularly tourist-friendly system--how many tourists are going to bother with cashing out the card at the end of their trip?
