Going to get a queen sized bed and don't know where to go, who to trust, what to ask.

I'm scared of Christine Magee and her shady practices, should I be? lol

Go to bedrrom outfitter's everyone I have suggested this to has bought a bed there. They say there is no commissions for the sales staff. There are 2 of them I think.

It seemed a lot more reasonable than the others and was solid wood compared with most ikea stuff. [/b][/quote]
Fotze I'm dissapointed, I see a thread about beds just asking for it, I think Fotzes going to have a hay day on this one, look see you've already posted in it. Open it and I'm shocked to find you've given a straight answer! Were's the old fotze and what have you done with him!

Well I'm sure wookie jumped on the former bed and it shattered into a million pieces due to all the dried staining.

I'm a little biased, but you can't really go wrong with Costco and mattresses.

You buy it, take it home and try it out, if you're not happy, bring it back, get your money back.

I can't remember the price for the standard Sealy queen mattress, but I know it's good value. There are also a few good deals on the website, although they are higher end ones if that's what you're after.

I used to work for a furniture store. Best thing to do is call around, and ask to speak to somebody in the comercial sales division. Say you were told to call by your realtor, but forgot who you were supposed to ask for.

Medium priced beds and up have a huge markup, so you can usually save yourself a few hundred bucks.

A bed is also something to not cheap out on. A good one will last you for a decade, and it's a place you spend about 1/3 of your life. (more if you are lucky.)

Not sure if it is still available, but buy a brand new queen size from the Salvation Army Thrift Stores for half what you pay anywhere else. You pick up.
BRAND NEW and made in Calgary . Good quality stuff.

Check them all out, lay on them with the woman, don't fall into the middle.
But most importantly look at the frame ,twist it, no or little movement that is good.
See if they will throw in the base that the beds sits on.
Don't buy the headboard ;you can with a little looking around find something both of you want. For far cheaper.

Most important of all ;Make sure it will fit. Not just in the room but around every corner and through every door, elevator, hallway etc.
It was a long time ago but I remember a few old houses that were just terrible.
Including my present basement. aagh !!

Got mine from the Brick, hate to support the damn Comries but it's the most comfy mattress I could find around town so I went with it, a Sealy pillowtop for $1100, no complaints after 10 months.

Christine McGee does an excellent job of marketing. I know a guy who went to sleep country assuming that they are the cheapest place from the radio ads, bought a bed and then found out he was ripped right off. He should have checked around before.

A tip if you go to sleep county, they have a category of inventory called 'overstock'. It is any mattress that they have in their invetory for >45days and they dramatically cut the price I think that we saved at least 25% (which made the price reasonable...not a bargain though).

I'm sure other places have similar systems for keeping invetory under control.

Moral of the story...ask for a deal

I have a simmons and love it.. Go to a simmons matress gallery if you have one in Calgary.. They seem to know beds the best. I would also suggest getting a king.. They are great.

I waited for the yearly sale at the Bay and got my king size one for a steal. Regular was $2500 or more, got it for just over $1000

I bought my bed from the Brick about 5 years ago.

It's the Sealy Paragon VII. I really liked it for the first few years but the motion transfer on it is brutal now. The support is still quite good though. It has a double pillow top and it is an extra firm mattress.

I would recommend getting a no flip mattress as opposed to a double pillow top.

Also, a good rule of thumb with beds is to subtract one year of usable life from the mattress for every time you move from one home to another. With all the bending, tipping on end, resting on corners and being crammed in a truck that the mattress goes through is really hard on it. And don't get a King Size bed unless you own the house that it is going into and you plan on having that bed in the same home until you get rid of it.

If you check out Simmons Sleep Centre (by Costco South), make sure you go here for $100 off: http://www.sleepcentre.ca/special_offer.html

If you're looking for a bargain, there's a mattress outlet store on Blackfoot Trail just south of Cash Caino (on the opposite side of the road). Good deals there.
