He's 31 Right now going on 32. Will be 40 once this contract is over.
He'll be cap fodder by 38.

Absolute fan favorite here in San Jose and probably the teams' most popular player (Pavelski is right there as well).
They had to keep him. I think the dollar value is fine but term is 2 years too much. 8 years seems a little long. 6 years would have been better but he probably insisted on that.

He'll still be a beast for the next 3 to 4 years, then he'll be serviceable for the next two. The bottom two years of that deal will be a tough pill to swallow for whoever is paying it.

He's such a good skater, I could see him being effective through age 40. And his game isn't really as rover-y as it used to be, he does most of his damage from the points.
However I think the AAV is a touch high, and Burns benefits a lot from both Pavelski and Thornton who might not be around in five or six years. Definitely some risk. But it's better than letting him to UFA.
