Default Isla Mujeres - Golf Cart Rental

So i'm going to Mexico for a wedding in a couple of weeks, and the bunch of the guys have decided one day they are going to rent a catamaran and head to Isla Mujeres and do the golf cart thing and go hopping from bar to bar for a couple of hours.

If this was a on a golf course, I'd have no problem with this, but it appears these are actual roads you are driving these golf carts on with actual traffic. Because of this i'm kind of now both legally and morally opposed to doing this.

As anyone actually been there before and done this? Is this something I should be concerned about. I don't think i'm going to drink now regardless, but is there some sort of DUI risk I should be warning them about? Looking at videos on youtube, it appears it's a common thing, but i'm still having issues with it.

We did it, though I don't remember if I drank much. I don't see it as all that dangerous but ya you are sharing the road. Because it is an island it isn't all that busy with traffic. I wouldn't want to get totally plastered, but one or 2 drinks it would be ok.

Is there really enough bars to bar hop?

From what I remember there is one street with stores and a couple restaurants.

There is definitely a police presence.

Also if that is your plan take the Ferry. It will be much cheaper and it might be tough to find a catamaran that will sit for a few hours. Usually if you book the trip there you stop for an hour for lunch. Also you will have to book the whole catamaran.

We are booking the whole catamaran. There's like 25 of us. It's actually surprisingly cheap to rent it out for the day when you have a large group.

Ya, their isn't actually a lot of places to go. You may be better to go ashore, rent them for a couple hours and do a quick tour then return them and chill in the bar district. There is a park at the north end which is probably the only destination.

Yah fair enough.

The couple times I have been to the island I get bored in about an hour or an hour and a half. Just doesn't seem like too much to do.

Edit: and I mean in a drinking/party type situation. Its fun to check out the island.

We did this with my wife's family a few years ago and I'd say it was one of the highlights of the trip.

There were a whole bunch of us, so we rented a few carts and drove (raced?) around the island for the day.

At one point I let my 12 year old nephew drive and we got pulled over by the cops. Apparently that's a no-no. My nephew goes to Spanish Immersion school so he talked to the cop in Spanish and he let us continue on our way... with one of the adults driving.

We plan on going snorkling at that under water art village, hitting the golf carts up for 2.5-3 hours, than heading back to the resort.

That sounds like a good time. I may have misunderstood your original post.

One recommendation I have is last time I was there there was a homemade ice cream stand. It was amazing. Especially in the hot sun.

My major concern is I think a lot of these guys think they are going to be hogwild on this Island for 3 hours. I don't think the police would bother you and your family driving around with a couple beers, but I can see this being a terrible idea for what is essentially a stag.

Yeah...I mean, on the one hand its a Golf Cart, what harm could it do? But on the other hand I've been there and that is tight quarters, you're sort of squashed between the cars on the road to your left and the throng of tourists on the sidewalk with pedestrians constantly crossing.

Get a DD maybe? Or just walk...its a really small island.

Its funny things people do when on vacation in a third world country. At home its safety first. Go on vacation, getbdrunk, do stupid #### and hope for the best.

Its not a criticism, only an observation. I have a buddy who crashed while drunk on a scooter and had a hospital stay before he could return home from a stag trip.

Default Cool Story Bro

A group of us rented scooters in Cancun a few years back . Spent a few hours having a good time ripping around until the cops decided to pull over everyone but myself and the groom we were able to use a city bus as a blocker and kept going while the cops corralled everyone else just off the main strip. In typical corrupt mexican police fashion they promptly robbed everyone else and continued on their merry way. Carry little to money just incase they try and rob you too.

Yeah, do this. Take the carts out to the diving park, do the loop up the other side of the island on the way back. Then park the carts and have some beverages. Not a lot of need to drink and drive on Isla.

Try out Bally Hoo. It's on a dock near the ferry port. Best fish tacos on earth and huge margaritas. I had two or three margaritas there one afternoon and have no recollection of the rest of the day. Ended up with a bitchin' hat.

My favourite place in Mexico. We regularly rent a house on that island. Golf cart = good times!

This is why I always strictly adhere to a no-drinking policy on Mexico vacations. Even 1 sip of beer could impair my driving capabilities on a slow speed golf cart.

Do you all think that 1 sip is ok? The roads are made of sand and I fear that traction could be an issue. Do you think he should bring his helmet with full face shield? What about full body suit armor to protect from the Zika virus?

Dude, you are playing with fire! You really shouldnt be within a 10 metre radius of an alcoholic beverage or anyone consuming one as you could inhale their exhalation and it would impair your ability to operate as a normal human being.

Then again, that ship may have already sailed.
