Default Has the World Cup Ruined the 2016-2017 Season For You?

Obviously things aren't great in Flames land, which contributes to my apathy for this NHL season, but I can't seem to get into the NHL this season whatsoever. I can honestly say the only game I could really get into so far was the Toronto/Canucks game because I hate the Canucks and love the rough stuff.

I've been thinking about it, and I think it has to do with the World Cup. To be honest, I hated the idea of a World Cup and considered it a gimmick. I even swore off watching it pre-tournament. Curiosity got the best of me though, and I ended up watching it, and the quality of the hockey was absolutely phenomenal. I ended up watching practically every game. Fast paces, highly skilled hockey at it's finest. I've come to the conclusion, that the quality of that tournament has made it so I find the NHL product boring.

I'm sure the NHL/NHLPA made a boatload of money off this tournament, but damn has it every showed the weakness in the NHL game to me. Having it so close to the start of the NHL season gives you very little time to forget just how great hockey can be until they start shoving boring trap fests and mediocre players down your throat.

Honestly, at this point, I've forgotten everything about the World Cup. Who won again? Where was it played? Was Team Europe really a thing or was I dreaming?

There are lots of items contributing to my apathy towards the Flames, but a pre-season tournament that was nothing more than an obvious money grab by the NHL is not one of them.

No. In fact I've long forgotten about it as to me it felt like nothing more than a late summer exhibition tournament.

For an exhibition game it sure was a hell of a lot more entertaining to watch than what i'm seeing in the NHL on a regular basis, and half the time they players seemed more engaged than they have since October rolled around.

There were a few really good games but I think you are overselling the overall entertainment value of the tournament.

Nope the Flames sucking has ruined the 16/17 season for me.

I wasn't even in the country for the entirety of the World Cup and am still fed up with this season.

Maybe so, but in general I found myself to be much more entertained watching those games than the dump and chase/off the glass and out product the NHL is serving up a nightly basis.

I'm not sure how the world cup could have ruined the season, its a best on best tournament . I don't ever expect the Flames to play anywhere near the quality of hockey that we got from it.

The flames have really put a damper on the season with the lackluster start.

Nope, the World Cup was a meaningless tournament where it really didn't matter who won. The games might have been fun to watch, but does it matter if the games are meaningless.

For the Flames till these last two games, it felt like the players were in World Cup mode. They were playing like the games didn't matter and that they didn't care if they won. There was no battle in their game. If the last two games are any indication hopefully we have moved past that.

So what the OP is saying is that distilling the talent in the NHL's 30 teams and 82 game schedule into 8 teams over a 6-7 game schedule makes for a more exciting game with more skill overall and more big moments?

I shall reduce my response to one gif:

A GIF is always the sign that you lack the ability to craft an appropriate response.

Of course it's going to be better hockey when it's best on best, my point is that it may have made the NHL money, but is it really a good idea to have best on best tournament two weeks before the start of an NHL season? The timing of it sucks.

It's the equivalent of taking a BMW for a test drive than taking a Toyota Corolla out. Which one are you going to pick?

No. The World Cup was a glorified all star game. It really wasn't that intense. The Flames are just a bad team this year thus it's harder to get into.

I looked at it as a cash grab for the NHL enginered around the Toronto market. I watched a bit, but have forgotten most of it. The only hockey I really watch, outside of Atom AA, is the Flames. So, the Flames don't look so bad in comparison to Atom.
