Icon48 TSN Insider trading - Oct 27 - New expansion draft wrinkle?

http://www.tsn.ca/video/insider-trad...an-city~981845

Summary:

Lindholm is the one who budged in negotiations. He wanted to play.
Ducks don't need to trade Fowler now because Depres is on LTIR for the foreseeable future. (more than just a concussion)
Murray says he doesn't need to make a big trade to fit Lindholm and that this one last shot for this group of players

There have been Canadian teams interested in Trouba, but he doesn't see a fit in Canada
Jets willing to offer 6 yrs x $5.5 million

Ryan Murphy could be trade bait
Needs less than 40 games to qualify for exposure for expansion draft so Francis may try to move him

Kings may want to claim Condon from Pens on waivers but Rutherford doesn't want to lose his goaltending depth and prefers to trade Condon.

Expansion draft wrinkle:
Las Vegas team will have 48 hour window after teams submit protected list and before Vegas submits their list of players they are taking.

In those 48 hours Vegas will be able to talk to any unprotected UFA/RFA from the other 30 teams.

For example if Brett Burns is still unsigned by the Sharks then Las Vegas could sign him in June with that window

The important caveat is that if a team loses a free agent to Vegas in June, then that team can no longer lose a player in the expansion draft

Fantastic news.

Now all Vegas has to do is sign Wideman in the 48 hour window and we're set.

lol

That is a good idea.

You know... I hear Deryk Engelland lives in Las Vegas during the offseason. He'd be a good leader for that team.

Please sign Engelland and spare us from the expansion draft

Talk to Engelland, express interest. Don't sign. Take a Flame. Sign Engelland a few days later.

That's how it will play out for depth players.

The league really needed to have all expansion draft rules set in stone before the 2016 draft.

I'd honestly rather them take Jokipakka from us and we re-sign Engelland

It's still early in the season, but I have a feeling the Flames are going to lose a forward.

Ferland and Shinkaruk are both off to solid starts this season, and only one of them can be protected (assuming they protect Gaudreau, Monahan, Backlund, Frolik, Bennett, and Brouwer as 6 of the 7 forwards). Shinkaruk would be an attractive pick-up for Vegas because he's still waiver exempt for another season.

There's a chance he doesn't play significant time in the NHL this season. Would be difficult to justify claiming a non-NHL player for your team. That said, if we do lose him I'd be pissed but ok. Most teams are going to lose a player, and Shinkaruk isn't (yet) a keystone of our team. And it's basically just losing a Sven.

No offense, but that's ridiculous. Jokipakka is equal if not better, and is, what, nine years younger?

not that there will be any big name RFAs left unprotected, but I'm assuming a team would get the customary time to match if Vegas did sign someone to an offer sheet?

No offence buy Engelland fits a much needed role while Jokipakka can be more easily replaced.

We've got all season to see what happens, but I dont see Jokipakka as anything more than another Shlemko or Nakladal level player. Good but easily replaceable

I just like what Engelland brings to the team much more, at least so far in Jokipakkas time as a Flame

I disagree. Jokipakka is something a lot of teams would want... a young, top-4 defenseman still with potential. Engelland is a known commodity who's already 34.

Guys like Engelland are the ones who are dime-a-dozen. Jokipakka is complementing Hamilton very nicely thus far, I think that could become a very, very good pairing in the future.

Also, Wood -- in regards to the Schlemko comparison, he's looking phenomenal this season. Sharks fans love him.

I also really like Shlemko, but he's one of those guys that doesn't fill that important of a role so hes never a priority. He's primed to be on the Vegas team

Disagree about Jokipakka being a top 4 guy. It would be nice, but he's not. When he can stay stay out the press box we can call him a 5/6

Why would any UFA sign with LV in that window and not just wait until full free agency and have 29 more teams as options. Still can sign in LV after exploring the market.

Okay find me another big, competent, physical defenceman who is also a fine enforcer.
