Default Favorite/Unfavorite TV Commentator/Analyst

In the OOT thread yesterday, the thread got a little hijacked by complaints about Remenda...this really didn't bother me, but, I thought to start a thread dedicated to the discussion.

For me...the be all, end all PBP guy was the HOFer, the late, Lloyd Petit ("a shot...AND A GOAL!"), but, I have some strong feelings about some of the others, and while my favorite team has another Foster Hewitt award announcer and a national TV analyst, I often tune to the opponent broadcast to get a feel for what is on THEIR minds.

again, Foley/Olcyzk is the 'Hawk crew...pluses, balanced call, not afraid to call out 'Hawk mistakes...minuses, sometimes distracted by shoutouts, jokes, anecdotes. When Olcyzk is on assignment for NBC, ex-'Hawk, ex-Flame, Steve Konroyd sits in, knowledgeable and honest, but bland. I can see that they can be annoying, if you aren't used to them.

I will go out of my way to hear Strangis/Reagh (Dallas) insightful, honest, and funny.

I liked Weber/Crisp (Nashville, now semi-retired), who did a good job in teaching a non-traditional market, while calling a good game...now it is Willy Daunic/and the Grim Reaper, Stu Grimson...Reaper is improving, but still not so smooth, but I have affection for the ex-'Hawk, Daunic is ok.

Miller/Fox in LA are also pretty darn good...

Guys I HATE (or hated as they may be now semi-retired)

Hughson (Canuck crybaby)
Remenda (Oil shill)
Federko (Blues crybaby)
Redmond (Wings crybaby)

I don't see a lot of Canadian TV feeds, on US satellite, unless NHL Network is picking up the HNIC feed for the game...

Well...let's hear from you guys/gals

Like I tell my kids, HATE is a strong word.

Bob Cole and Harry Neale is the best ever though.

Bob Cole in his prime is hard to beat. Guy had impeccable timing on when to get excited when calling a goal. Lots of classics from him, for sure.

I personally really like Chris Cuthbert too, and think he's wasted doing CFL broadcasts. CBC really dropped the ball when they let him go.

I watch more Western Conference than Eastern.

Hayward in Anaheim is by far the worst analyst ever.
Fox talks a bit too much
Randy Hahn PBP in San Jose is really good.

8sPOT...make it, HATE to listen to (them whine)...

Girly agree that Hahn is solid...not fond of his sidekick Baker (far too bland)

This is an unpopular opinion but I thought Peter - some kind of - Loubardias was a great play by play guy.

My buddy's a Blues fan so I watch a lot of their games, and John Kelly/Darren Pang might be one of the best duos in the league. Kelly calls a great game, and how can you not like Panger? The guy is adorable and loves hockey so much. He's a less annoying Pierre Maguire, and I mean that in the most endearing way possible.

Chris Cuthbert is my all-time favourite from years of great calls in the WJHC and Olympics.

Honestly there aren't any guys I hate. I find the "biased" comments to be hilarious - as it usually reflects the persons own bias more than it does the announcers.

As for my favorites:

Chris Cuthbert to me is the best announcer in Canada - it's a shame he can't do more hockey games.
Bob Cole is a legend and I still love listening to him.
I think Doc Emerick and Eddie Olcyzk do a great job on NBC
Ball and Hrudey are great for the Calgary games.

I'm not sure if this was supposed to be just hockey but Joe Buck doing baseball is the shiz.

For hockey I agree with most of what people are saying. Cole and Neale back in the day, Cuthbert etc.

I absolutely despise pbp or colour guys who talk to much. Pierre McGuire is super guilty of this. Joe Buck on the other hand, is awesome at shutting up. Same with the guy who called the 2016 Wildcard game between the Jays and O's. I commented in the GT that he didn't speak for like a minute and a half or something after EE belted that HR. McGuire's head would explode if he didn't start shouting after a moment as big as that.

I also remember the TSN panel yapping through the 2010 medal ceremony, god that was annoying. Watching it on the announcerless Olympics specialty channel was 1000x better.

+1 For Chris Cuthbert as favorite, I miss him calling hockey games. When they Flames played the Canucks in round 1 of 2015 playoffs, I watched the US Network broadcast just for Cuthbert and man those were great games being called by a great announcer.

+1 For Jim Hughson as least appealing, terrible homer and shows way too much bias to be a "National" broadcaster. Plus he has one of the most annoying voices I have heard....ever

Cecil...Buck gets a lot of grief for gushing about players...some wag made a Buck/Schwarber wedding registry page, during the recent World Series (YES! GO CUBBIES!)

Hughson is good on non Canuck games.

His only flaw is locking onto storylines to hard. Eddie lacks dad, Ferlands mom and 18yr old Sam Bennett

Hrudy Ball is a fantastic pairing and probably the best current Canadian duo

The only ones who really annoy me are Remenda and Garrett because they whine about literally everything. I have no idea how they still have jobs, it seems really unprofessional.

Hahn had a bad night last night. Kept calling Brouwer Ferland and once mistook Jokkiapokka for Gio.

Also had a weird thing in the first where he refused to call Dougie by that name. Said he's old enough now to drop the "-ie" and called him Doug for the first period. Generally, he's usually pretty good.

My likes, Hughson on non-Canuck games, Dave Strader and Gary Thorne are top of the line.

Can't stand Remenda, Romanuk and Penguin's PBP guy (Steigerwald or something like that).

Not sure if the Wild Live guys are still the tandem in Minnesota, but Dan Terhaar & Mike Greenlay used to be super annoying. In the early 2000's, everybody (much like me) had the "stolen satellite signals" so NHL GameCenter used to have a lot of the Wild vs Flames games with the Minnesota feed opposed to Flames feeds. Those guys used annoy the crap out of me.

Hayward and Remenda are the worst. They twist the truth so badly. Makes you want to shoot your tv when their ugly mugs come on.

Hughson is a homer, but at least he is really good at his job.

Rick Ball is really really good. You don't even realize that he's a Canuck fan. That's a pro right there.
