Default I like Matt Stajan

Stajan has been a contentious point of discussion for Flames fans ever since we acquired him. There's been a lot to like about his game this year. It feels like he's been extremely consistent and competing extra hard, and it definitely shows. Although his contract is a little hefty, Matt Stajan definitely has a role on this team - and he's been playing it extremely well.

Darren Haynes just wrote an article about Stajan's monster defensive shift yesterday (with 22.8 seconds left).

Quote:
Exactly eleven seconds earlier in a battle of 32-year-olds with over 1,600 combined NHL games, Matt Stajan had cleanly beaten Joe Pavelski on a draw at that very same spot on the ice.

But could he out-duel the Sharks captain once again?
Quote:
As they untangle, Stajan whacks Pavelski in the back of the head with his stick, Pavelski gives a shot right back, Stajan counters with a right jab.

Exhaustion is setting in and and the puck hasn't touched the ice yet.
Quote:
"He adds to our culture," says head coach Glen Gulutzan. "He's one of our leaders in that locker room. I knew that coming in. and I've really been happy with his play and he's been an inspired player right now. He's done a lot of good things for us."
Quote:
Giordano said the players apprenticing under him could learn a lot just by observing.

"Our young guys can take a lot from his positioning out there. If you watch him play, especially deep in the D zone, he's never in a rush and that's the way to play center in the D zone and he always seems to find those right spots."
Quote:
Well, there is one number that stands out for Stajan. It is the number one, as in only one even-strength goal has been scored against him this season. That's mighty impressive. That's in a dozen games and having played the equivalent ice time of over two full games at even-strength -- 122:06 to be exact.

If you are one to scoff at a goal-based metric like plus-minus, no problem, shot-based advanced stats tell a similar story. In SAT% Close (aka Corsi Close, aka the ratio of attempted shots for versus attempted shots against while that player is on the ice and the game is within a goal), his 57.34 is second among Flames regulars behind only Micheal Ferland (57.86). Plus it should be noted that over 75 percent of Stajan's zone starts (aka when he's on the ice for a face-off) have come in the defensive zone, which naturally adds a layer of difficulty.

I will always like Matt Stajan for his playoff goal that advanced the Flames past the Canucks. He's also such a great off ice ambassador for the Flames.

Good article.

As far as my appreciation for Stajan goes, i'd appreciate him a lot more if he had a different contract.

Stajan has been fantastic this year.

Backlund's line and Stajan's line have carried the team so far.

Great piece by Darren Haynes.

I think Stajan is very similar to Engelland -- overpaid to be a fourth line centre but does his job and doesn't complain. Also has the ability to move up the lineup and be a second or third line centre in a pinch. Veteran leader. Good guy in the room.

And yes, he'll always be in my good books because of this:

How much does it cost to get a print like that?

^Seconded. I want that print!!

Adding to its awesomeness, that is pretty much exactly the angle that I watched that play from in my seats - looking right over his shoulder.

Such as awesome moment - especially since it was a guy that takes a lot of abuse and does nothing but show up and do his job every day.

Found the image online and printed it during the 16x24 canvas sale that otto-matic posted in the OT forum last year.

Incidentally, the same company is having another canvas sale on Saturday (only for 10x15 though) - http://forum.calgarypuck.com/showthread.php?t=157796

Good points here. Usually I'm pretty critical of Stajan, but he seems to be off to a good start this season.

That said, I certainly won't be advocating re-signing him once his contract is up.

I like Stajan, he's exactly what you want out of your fourth line centre. Dependable, hard working, and a great leader. Even chips in with a nice offensive play from time to time.

But his contract is still horrific for what he is and that will always color people's perceptions. If he was making half as much he'd be a fan favourite.

A perfect 4th line defensively responsible veteran center that can lead by example. Slightly overpaid and maybe could be a little better on the dot but I have learned to truly respect him. Surprised he doesn't have an "A" but he doesn't need it.

Very happy for him this season, keep it up Matt.

Funny enough, even faceoffs aren't a problem this year. He's 55.8% through 12 games so far. I'm enjoying every Stajan shift thus far, it's good to see and I'm happy he's having success.

He's been very good this year. Ferland and him have been very effective together.

I like Stajan. A lot. The contract is another matter obviously.

But if he is one of your better forwards night after night, you aren't winning many games. And that's not a knock on him.

The Stajans are one of the main reasons I started following the team again a lot closer. The work they have done with the community and the hospital that has mostly gone under the radar is incredible. Just phenomenal people
