Fertilizing in Fall?
Hi all. I'm wondering if I have missed the proper timing window to get the last application of fertilizer on my lawn before winter? Would it be a waste of time and product now? Part of the lawn was sodded in 2015 and I'm trying to keep it as healthy through the end of the year and into next, as there was a bit of damage after last winter and I'd like to do my best to avoid that. This would be the third application this year. Any advice would be appreciated.

Best time is probably the middle of October. You don't want to use a fertilizer that is high in nitrogen. Use a fall fertilizer. Once the ground starts freezing then you've waited too long and you're likely wasting the fertilizer. I don't always fertilize in the fall and my grass always turns out well. Fall fertilizing helps to prevent disease in the winter, and your grass will come up green quicker in the spring time.

I am sure I read somewhere that you can throw grass seed down and you can green up and fill your lawn in while being a little more environmentally thoughtful

And here I thought this was yet another in a litany of political threads.
Why is there so much BS in the Fall? Elections?

I usually do my last fertilizer application when I cut my grass for the last time (or at least the last time I expect to do it). That usually means sometime in early October and then the light snow / rain we get makes sure the lawn absorbs it. Considering the weather is still pretty warm, I would say it's still not too late to put it down now, but you should likely try to do it just a bit earlier next time.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the responses. I'm new to the whole home ownership thing so I'm trying not to mess anything up too badly.

When I was new to it the biggest issue I had was remembering to drain your outdoor hoses. You dont want to screw that one up.
And turn off the water. Should mention that as well.

Yes you can broadcast fertilizer right now and still benefit from it next year. The snow/rain will move the fertilizer into the soil come springtime.

It doesn't need nitrogen for the winter. You don't want it to grow now. Higher nitrogen is for spring or early summer.

I guess I just assumed this guy is in Canada?
Your lawn isn't going to grow in November.
Fertilizing with nitrogen now will have the nutrients in place for when the grass starts growing again in Spring.

Still not too late, no frost in the ground yet. I did my final fertilize last Sunday. As others have mentioned, use a Fall formulation for best results

Costco sells a Fall Fertilizer. I used it last year at this time. Lawn came around really nicely around May.
